Comment Re:How do they 'encourage' us to stay home? (Score 5, Insightful) 670

Some people literally cant afford to be sick, I.E. you don't work you don't get paid.

I've known people to get bad yearly reviews because they used too much sick time.

I've known people to not get promotions specifically on the grounds that they used too much of their sick time.

Not more than they had but too much.

Oh and if your out more than 2 days don't forget your doctors note, because you have to goto a doctor and pay your non-reimbursable copay (if you have insurance) for them to confirm: yes you are sick and should stay home.

Comment Misinformation, its not due to windows 8.... (Score 1) 571

As much as i don't like windows 8, the price hike is not due to slow sales of windows 8, but a push to hosted services. What Microsoft is trying to do is make it more expensive to run an in-house clout that to use the existing cloud they host. I have already done a cost comparison for my employer and as of a month ago it was a wash, it cost the same to host our environment in the cloud as to support it locally over a 5 year span. Now if you raise the price of the local licenses, well now the cloud looks more enticing.

years of bitching that OEM's don't sell Linux products and everyone is forced to buy one with as Microsoft license. Now a decent machine comes out and you bitch about the price. Instead of bitching about it, how about embracing the fact that Dell took the time to hire people to design and support a small niche market. Or be happy that Linux is gaining ground in the market.

Submission + - U.S. had plans to nuke the moon (cnn.com)

who_stole_my_kidneys writes: It was (a plan) hatched in 1958 — a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a nuclear arms race that would last decades and drive the two superpowers to the verge of nuclear war. The Soviets had also just launched Sputnik 1, the world's first satellite. The U.S. was falling behind in the space race, and needed a big splash.
