Comment Try paying them..... (Score 1) 166

In my experience the pay rate was well under what private companies pay, and for some one who is worth their salt they would jump at a private company that is going to pay them 30% more + stocks and better medical benefits. Hiring some one for a position takes 2-3 times as long to process paperwork, and if they have not been offered another position with a private company, the laugh at the offered salary.

Exactly, either way your going to continue to hemorrhage cash on this, however having in house devs document and create the modules you need will help in the long run as a point of contact to upgrade, patch, and improve upon. Having contractors will get you what you need in the short term but your going to pay extra just for changing the icon to cornflower blue.

Submission + - First Chicago robber caught via facial recognition gets 22 years (arstechnica.com)

mpicpp writes: The first man to be arrested in Chicago based on facial recognition analysis was sentenced last week to 22 years in prison for armed robbery. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Chicago Police Department acquired the technology via a $5.4 million federal grant.

In February 2013, Pierre Martin robbed a man at gunpoint while on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train. After taking the man’s phone, Martin jumped off the train. However, his image was captured by CTA surveillance cameras and was then compared to the Chicago Police Department’s database of 4.5 million criminal booking images. Martin, who already had priors, had a mugshot in the database. He was later positively identified by witnesses.

At trial, Martin also admitted to committing a similar robbery also on the Pink Line in January 2013—his face was captured during both robberies.

Linux engineers would have no problem learning Windows stuff

Quite the opposite, I work with allot of high caliber Linux engineers , and one of the most difficult challenges is getting them to understand windows and how operate it. When they continually try to 'grep' files instead of using power-shell, 'ls', or even 'nano' a text file. They tend to flock to OSX that offers them and environment that is more like the environment they are used to.

The over all issue, repeated here is that Windows admins are cheaper than Linux admins. Any Linux admin worth their salt is not going to take the low paying desktop job that a college grad might take as a first real world job.
