Comment not news or really relevent (Score 1) 497

This is old news. The point about organic is that:

1. It is better for the soil (no citation to hand)
2. Less pesticide seepage in groundwater (you may know it better as drinking water)
3. They are supposed to enforce better standards of care for their animals (supposed to, there is the problem with restricting use of antibiotics)

That is why you should buy it.

On the other hand home grown stuff (veg and animals) is much better (tastier etc) than shop bought so grow or raise your own where possible.
Personally I get it because:
1. It is local (money spent locally stays in the community and there is less travel so it is likely to be fresher and cause less pollution from transport)
2. Better for soil/environment
3.If you buy at the local market you actually meet the producers

'Course others may buy it for different reasons

This already happens. What do you think happens to your search history? (and your facebook history, etc.)
Profiling of people based on their search history/browsing history/social network is used to identify terrorists. Of course you are not (yet) arrested as a result but you are watched very carefully and put on "lists".

Just because no-one has used this information against you does not mean it does not exist.

Submission + - Delay for January Stanford Online Courses (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: Online Computer Science classes that have attracted tens of thousands of students have been put back for a couple of weeks. Is this on account of Sebastian Thrun's resignation from Stanford?
What ever the reason providing certificates for online students seems to be a real point of contention. James Plummer, dean of Stanford's School of Engineering said:
"I think it will actually be a long time, maybe never, when actual Stanford degrees would be given for fully online work by anyone who wishes to register for the courses."
The good news is that the delay means that there is still time to sign up.

Fighting With Your Fingers — A Canceled Indie Game Concept For Natal 45

ChiefMonkeyGrinder writes "Though Microsoft's Project Natal won't be released until later this year, indie studio Arkedo has already revealed a canceled project for the peripheral. Called 2 Finger Heroes, it was to be a beat 'em up where your fingers do the fighting. 'Characters would be controlled by moving your fingers, while special moves could be done by incorporating your whole hand. The environment could even be affected by moving your arms folded at your chest.' On why it was canceled, one of the developers said, 'One of the design flaws of this, apart from the fact that it demanded some very precise pattern recognition from the Natal system, is that it would have been HELL to localize. Yup, what can be understood as the victory sign in France could be a terrible insult in the UK, for instance. And we are not even talking about Italian. Oh, the possibilities...'"

Microsoft Pleads With Consumers to Adopt Vista Now 912

SlinkySausage writes "Microsoft has admitted, in an email to the press, that 'some customers may be waiting to adopt Windows Vista because they've heard rumors about device or application compatibility issues, or because they think they should wait for a service pack release.' The company is now pleading with customers not to wait until the release of SP1 at the end of the year, launching a 'fact rich' program to try to convince them to 'proceed with confidence'. The announcement coincides with an embarrassing double-backflip: Microsoft had pre-briefed journalists that it was going to allow home users to run Vista basic and premium under virtual machines like VMWare, but it changed its mind at the last minute and pulled the announcement."
