Journal Journal: This Town Deserves A Better Class of Troll

It's rather sad that this is the best we have now. Granted, the other guy could dramatically improve his act by following all his comments with fart jokes, but the better act sucks too. Comparing these two is somewhat like comparing the kid who calls a random number on the phone and asks about their refrigerator to the kid who calls numbers he knows and recites Bart Simpson prank calls.

Journal Journal: Welcome back, SlashPot (thank you failure machine samzenpus) 39

I guess "failure machine" samzenpus really will post anything.

Now, before the Pro Pot Propaganda Pushers here start calling me a fascist, let me point out where my criticism is. This is about how samzenpus failed to even approach a useful summary of the article that the summary linked to - which I will point out is freely available to everyone. In particular, because failure machine couldn't be bothered to read the article, he missed:

Nevertheless, as previously stressed, our findings should not be interpreted that moderate alcohol consumption poses a higher risk to an individual and their close contacts than regular heroin use14. Much of the harm from drug use is not inherently related to consumption, but is heavily influenced by the environmental conditions of the drug use2, and this additional hazard is not included in a drug ranking based on (animal) toxicology.

The first major problem of the approach is the lack of toxicological dose-response data for all compounds except alcohol and tobacco. No human dose-response data are available; also no dose-response data in animals, only LD50 values are published. Furthermore, no chronic-toxicity data (long-term experiments) are available, which are usually used for such kinds of risk assessment. Therefore, we can assess only in regards to mortality but not carcinogenicity or other long-term effects. The absence of such data is specifically relevant for compounds with low acute toxicity (such as cannabis), the risk of which may therefore be underestimated.

In other words, the study was looking to see how much of a substance was required to kill you immediately. They mentioned very few substances have known limits for that. They also went on to mention that cannabis in particular is not studied much from a toxicology standpoint when compared to other drugs:

The second major problem is the uncertainty in data about individual and population-wide exposure due to the illegal markets. There is a scarcity of epidemiological studies of cannabis use by comparison with epidemiological studies of alcohol and tobacco use

Indeed, I agree with their closing remark:

Currently, the MOE results point to risk management prioritization towards alcohol and tobacco rather than illicit drugs. The high MOE values of cannabis, which are in a low-risk range, suggest a strict legal regulatory approach rather than the current prohibition approach.

Not that the propagandists here on slashdot would bother to read that far.

Journal Journal: How long until I'm down-moderated for that one? 7

I've noticed it is - for no good reason - popular to down moderate journal entry comments. Apparently some people find that it is just too much to ask people to read all 12 comments in a JE discussion, they should be able to easily exclude opinions they don't like based on moderation score alone.

In that vein, I share that I wrote a comment in a conservative JE discussion . In it, I was so bold as to read sources, cite sources, and do other such terrible things.

Clearly, this is flamebait and deserves to be moderated thusly. It would be terrible if anyone were to read it. I've heard there are times when upwards of 8 people read a single JE before it is automatically closed for discussion.

Journal Journal: Not Surprised In The Least 15

I found myself subjected to Rush Limbaugh for a few moments this afternoon (never before have I felt more urge to shout in a car just to drown out ambient noise). What little I was able to tolerate he spent pleasuring himself over the announcement of Jon Stewart announcing his upcoming departure from the Daily Show.
It's funny. Laugh.

Journal Journal: $freaks++ 10

I put a conservative blowhard in his place when he wrote multiple lying comments in a short time. As facts are clearly too hard for him to comprehend, he added me to his foes list instead. Not much investment in that one. Frankly I'm surprised his foes list isn't longer; I think it is still shorter than the infamous perma-hate list of our dear friend Pudge.

I could fire up the slashdot bastard quotient script for this one, but I'm not that concerned.

Journal Journal: Careless gun owner of the day: 2.5 hits 1 bullet 24

3-year-old toddler in New Mexico shoots father, pregnant mother. Apparently the toddler pulled a gun from mom's purse, squeezed off one shot, and in the process hit dad (first) and pregnant mom (after passing through dear old dad). As usual:

Drobik says the case has been sent to Albuquerque District Attorneyâ(TM)s Office, which will determine whether the parents will be charged with criminal negligence

Which mens this will likely be pushed under the rug. There was also a two-year-old in the room who was fortunately not injured.

Journal Journal: Indeed, I Have Been Trolled

Yeah, I knew better. I really, really did. But in a moment of weakness, I fell for it. Arguably, it was closer to a couple hours of weakness, but you get the point. I came out alright on the other side, but knowing that I could have done better with my time.

Yeah, they got me this time. It won't happen again.

Journal Journal: The Kevlar Kandidate Starts Kampaigning 30

Looks who is back in Iowa, but the Kevlar Kandidate. Of course, his priority is Wisconsin, so he isn't officially running for POTUS (wink, wink) - he's just giving the best presidential speeches he can just in case there is a presidential election after his current term as governor is up.

Pop quiz - can you name a democrat who is not from Iowa who has spent more time in Iowa in 2015 than Scott Walker? Yeah, neither can anyone else.

I'm particularly looking forward to him selling himself as an outsider in light of the plain fact that

he has been in office for more than 75 percent of his adult life

Although since nobody seems to be bothered by the fact that his budgets have led to the opposite of their promises in almost every single case, they probably won't be bothered by this either.

Apparently, if your leaders keep telling you long enough how awesome guns are, you eventually lose the ability to stop shooting yourself in the foot.

Journal Journal: More Guns Get You What, Now? 31

The FBI's Uniform Crime Report (UCR) has been released through 2012. While crime is generally down, it is interesting to notice the geographic distribution of property and violent crimes (Image 2/20). The highest rate of violent crime - 423.7 per 100,000 inhabitants - is in the south (Texas to Florida up to Maryland). The highest rate of property crime - 3,226.8 per 100,000 - is in that same region.
