Submission + - Why do you want to kill my pet? Zynga to shut down PetVille and 10 Others (techcrunch.com) 1

Dr Herbert West writes: Executing the cost-reduction plan CEO Mark Pincus announced in November, Zynga has shut down, pulled from the app stores, or stopped accepting new players to more than 10 games such as PetVille, Mafia Wars 2, FishVille, Vampire Wars, Treasure Isle, Indiana Jones Adventure World, Mafia Wars Shakedown, Forestville, Montopia, Mojitomo, and Word Scramble Challenge.

Comments from gamers on the shutdown notices included things like “my daughter is heartbroken” and “Please don’t remove petville. I been playing for 4 yrs. and I’M going to miss my pet Jaime.why do you want cause depression for me and others. Why do you want to kill my pet?”

For players that have invested a lot of microtransactions and/or time, this comes as a heavy blow. Most readers on /. have become used to game publishers disabling content or shutting servers down with little or no notice-- is this a further sign of things to come, or will this cause enough outrage to reverse the trend?

Submission + - Canonical ominously hints at product release (ubuntu.com)

ZarathustraDK writes: "A mysterious countdown has appeared on the frontpage of Ubuntu's homepage, pointing to the imminent release of some new Canonical/Ubuntu-related product. The countdown makes no small effort to conceal that whatever it is, it is touch-related.

So what is it? A phone? A tablet? Ubuntu on Android? An office-stressball?

Side-question: How do you make stuff like this not sound astroturfy?"

Submission + - Oliver Stone: "The US has become an Orwellian State" (rt.com)

dryriver writes: Americans are living in an Orwellian state argue Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone and historian Peter Kuznick, as they sit down with RT to discuss US foreign policy and the Obama administration’s disregard for the rule of law. Both argue that Obama is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and that people have forgiven him a lot because of the “nightmare of the Bush presidency that preceded him.” “He has taken all the Bush changes, he basically put them into the establishment, he has codified them,” Stone told RT. “It is an Orwellian state. It might not be oppressive on the surface, but there is no place to hide. Some part of you is going to end up in the database somewhere.” According to Kuznick, American citizens live in a fish tank where their government intercepts more than 1.7 billion messages a day. “That is email, telephone calls, other forms of communication.”

Submission + - Toddler Almost Dead When His Egg Collection Hatches into Eastern Brown Snakes (oddityjournal.com)

anasshad writes: "Finding a bunch of writhing snakes in one's wardrobe can be the worst of a nightmare. Kyle Cummings, a 3-year old Australian toddler, almost lost his life when he found that the eggs he had collected from his backyard and provided the comfort of his house, had now hatched into deadly Eastern Brown snakes — the second most venomous snake on earth."
Enlightenment

After 12 years of Development, E17 Is Out 259

The Enlightenment front page bears this small announcement: "E17 release HAS HAPPENED!" The release announcement is remarkably spartan — it's mostly a tribute to the dozens of contributors who have worked on the software itself and on translating it into many languages besides system-default English. On the other hand, if you've been waiting since December 2000 for E17 (also known as Enlightenment 0.17), you probably have some idea that Enlightenment is a window manager (or possibly a desktop environment: the developers try to defuse any dispute on that front, but suffice it to say that you can think of it either way), and that the coders are more interested in putting out the software that they consider sufficiently done than in incrementing release numbers. That means they've made some side trips along the way, Knuth-like, to do things like create an entire set of underlying portable libraries. The release candidate changelog of a few days ago gives an idea of the very latest changes, but this overview shows and tells what to expect in E17. If you're among those disappointed in the way some desktop environments have tended toward simplicity at the expense of flexibility, you can be sure that Enlightenment runs the other way: "We don't go quietly into the night and remove options when no one is looking. None of those new big version releases with fanfare and "Hey look! Now with half the options you used to have!". We sneak in when you least expect it and plant a whole forest of new option seeds, watching them spring to life. We nail new options to walls on a regular basis. We bake options-cakes and hand them out at parties. Options are good. Options are awesome. We have lots of them. Spend some quality time getting to know your new garden of options in E17. It may just finally give you the control you have been pining for."

Steam For Linux Is Now an Open Beta 353

New submitter jotaass writes "In news that is guaranteed to make the Linux gaming community (in particular, but not exclusively) excited, Valve has just announced that the Steam for Linux client Beta is now open to the public. A .deb package is available here. Interesting as well, they are using an empty GitHub repository solely as an issue tracker, open for anyone to submit, edit and track bugs, with no actual code in the repo."

Submission + - Google+ Chief Grounded from Twitter by Larry Page 2

theodp writes: Vic Gundotra, formerly Sr. VP of Social (and now, of Engineering) at Google, and head of the company’s social networking service Google+, hasn’t posted anything on his Twitter account since July 2011. Why? Responding to a question about his own social networking behavior at SMX 2012, Gundotra explained that he was asked by Google CEO Larry Page not to tweet anymore. 'I was asked not to tweet again.' Gundotra said (video). 'I was asked not to do that by my boss [Page]. I tweeted a tweet about two companies [Microsoft, Nokia] that went viral, went very very viral and made a lot of headline news.' So, what does it say when the Google CEO who reportedly tied all Googlers' bonuses to social networking apparently finds it too dangerous to permit the head of Google+ to participate in social networking?

skade88 writes: If you are like me, the proud owner of a Radeon card, and feeling left out of the Linux graphics driver revolution that swept Nvidia cards recently, then stay tuned! There might be hope for us seeing better graphics performance in the Linux 3.8 kernel! Phoronix has a great preview in store of all of us!

Submission + - Ubuntu Community Manager: RMS's post seems a bit childish to me (jonobacon.org)

spacenet writes: As a response to RMS speaking out against Ubuntu about its privacy-violating integrated Amazon search results, which he considers to be spyware, Ubuntu Community Manager Jono Bacon has responded to RMS's post. In his reply, Jono claims that Stallman's views on privacy do not align with Canonical's, that some of his statements are worded in order to "generate fear, uncertainty, and doubt about Ubuntu" and that "it just seems a bit childish to me".

The comments on the post itself are well worth a read.

Submission + - The Kill the Hobbit to Save Regular Earth' Initiative needs help (americanassembly.org)

S Vulpy writes: It seems that Warner Bros extorted $120 million in subsidies from the government of New Zealand to keep Hobbit production in New Zealand. Plus 3-strikes laws, plus illegal spying on Kim Dotcom, plus support for the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (SOPA on steroids), plus changed its labor laws. Naturally, WB is now back for more. The 'Kill the Hobbit to Save Regular Earth' Initiative has now launched a contest for drawings or other artistic representations of this horrible story.
