Comment Progress in financing education? (Score 1) 651

To quote Obama in TFA
"We've made incredible progress on education, helping students to finance their college educations"

What progress? I'm still paying huge amounts of money for college. Why can't it be free like it is in Finland or other European countries? Oh right, that's socialism. Didn't mean to rock the boat too much.

Comment Left Late, Landed Late (Score 1) 264

I was flying back from Richmond, VA to my hometown in Illinois. The plane left late, and arrived late enough at O'Hare that I missed my flight back home. So the best the airline company could do for me was to send me to a different airport in Illinois about an hour from where I lived so I had to call someone to drive out there and pick me up. It kind of sucked.

Fortunately, there weren't any problems on getting to Richmond.

It doesn't necessarily have to be PayPal, but I'd like to see paper currency replaced by something digital. Nothing is worse than buying something and then dealing with change. I really don't have any reason to carry pennies and nickels so all that change I get is lost money. There could be some government sanctioned digital currency and I would be cool with that. It should work like a check so that you can use it to pay people who aren't equipped to handle credit cards, but without the paper. Maybe you could bump smartphones together and verify the transaction or something cool with NFC devices.

I don't think it's fair to compare the Internet to putting a fence around a pool so they don't fall in and drown.
Whats the worst that's going to happen on the Internet? They see naked people perform a natural process?

The examples you gave were all life threatening (even the bit about liquor which can be dangerous to young children). The Internet isn't life threatening.

I'm transferring from a community college to a 4 year university this fall, and I just checked the IT page on the website.
Windows users have to jump through more hoops to get on the network than Mac and Linux users. Windows users need to use special software that verifies you have an approved antivirus program. Macs have a client program as well, but any other OS just needs to go through some sort of portal page and login with your college ID.

From information on the university website, they use Cisco NAC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco_NAC_Appliance
Definitely check the website beforehand.

I don't like this idea. It sounds good, but legislatures write law, and what are most legislators? Lawyers. Do I want Joe SixPack writing laws when he has zero legal background. And do I want "experts" telling him what to do? A bunch of random nobodies would be too easily manipulated by these experts or advisers who know how the system works.

The latest Medal of Honor game had Taliban as a playable faction for mutliplayer, but they had to change it to some generic "Terrorist" team because of the backlash. There were people that were upset that you could play the Taliban and shoot at American soldiers in a virtual environment. I don't think most /.ers will find this offensive, but such people do exist.

You're right, but computers are so common these days that anyone thinking about majoring in CS can easily teach themselves the basics just by doing tutorials online and asking questions on sites like StackOverflow. CS isn't like doing Chemistry which requires a bunch of expensive, specialized equipment. Everyone has the resources to put Visual Studio Express, Python, or Linux on their machine and mess around. They may not get all the theory, but they'll at least know the basics. If you're not interested in CS enough to type a measly "print 'Hello World'" into a .py file before declaring your major then maybe CS isn't for you.
