I hope I'm not telling you something too simple that you are already aware of, but just in case, I think it is viable, but do not know the legality. On the other hand, you could rip the CD on a separate computer and mount the ISO, though that might be heavy for a netbook to do this and also play at the same time.
Also I like sites like GoG.com which sell old games with no DRM, but that might not be such a consolation if you already own the agmes and do not want to repurchase.
