Submission + - What is a good "Personal" Version Control system? 1

StonyCreekBare writes: I maintain a number of documents, spreadsheets, and some small programs for personal use. Years ago I used a version control software system to track such things in my professional world. Lately I have been itching to move to some sort of a version control system to keep the various files better organized and track my changes in my personal world. I started looking at various systems available such as Subversion, and while it would definitely do the job, it seems a bit like using an elephant gun to swat a fly. I want something simpler, with less of a learning curb, that is suited for a single user, with a small number of files, in various formats. I mainly mean Spreadsheets, Doc files, and text files. Do Slashdot users have a smaller simpler solution they recommend?

This is really the first use of x-rays without some kind of medical benefit. And across the whole population.

That's not exactly accurate:

In the late 1940's and early 1950's, the shoe-fitting x-ray unit was a common shoe store sales promotion device and nearly all stores had one.

Submission + - Worlds first Stem Cell trial for Stroke Patients. (telegraph.co.uk)

Mike Zahalan writes: "The elderly man was injected with roughly two million neural stem cells at Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. They hope the stem cells will help the man recover from his stroke, by transforming into mature neurons and also stimulating the brain to harness its own recuperative powers."

"Silver Lake Partners and Blackstone Group LP are among the firms that have expressed interest in teaming up with AOL to buy Yahoo or trying to take it private on their own, these people said. They added that at least two or three other firms could be interested in participating if a formal buyout proposal is drawn up."

Submission + - Wave goodbye to BIOS and say hello to UEFI (gizmag.com) 1

The Installer writes: It would seem that after MANY MANY long years of dealing with a simple system that prevents users from having "instant on" terminals, there is hope in site! Yes, that's right kids, BIOS may be on it's way out.

From the article: "UEFI started life as an Intel specification but has now changed into a general standard that offers similar boot and runtime services as the BIOS, but has the advantage of not being specifically tied to any processor architecture. It also has a different approach to dealing with the process of identifying and activating hardware prior to handing over to the OS. For example, instead of telling the operating system that there's a mouse attached to a specific port, UEFI simply recognizes that somewhere in the machine there's a device that behaves like a mouse."

Comment Wordpress Mod (Score 1) 244

I think it would be pretty cool if somebody would write a mod for wordpress that can automatically convert links you share in your posts to goo.gl urls... that could make the stats analysis easier. Also, it would be pretty sweet if the link had a hover tag that showed the original url to dispel visitors skepticism.

Submission + - Google URL Shortener Opened To The Public (searchengineland.com)

Anonymusing writes: Just what the world needs, another URL shortener, right? Google seems to think to, and it’s making its own widely available to anyone — complete with tracking and statistics — for free. As noted on its blog: "There are many shorteners out there with great features, so some people may wonder whether the world really needs yet another. As we said late last year, we built goo.gl with a focus on quality. With goo.gl, every time you shorten a URL, you know it will work, it will work fast, and it will keep working. You also know that when you click a goo.gl shortened URL, you’re protected against malware, phishing and spam using the same industry-leading technology we use in search and other products." Is bit.ly shaking in its boots?
