Very helpful advice. Check out gearslutz.com for some other (hopefully) useful answers. The forum is very good.

THIS.

I resisted getting a mac for about 15 years. Just do yourself a favour, buy a macbook pro, or even an air, and you will be amazed at how easy everything is and how well everything works. Open source is a waste of time.

Windows will work ok, but for various reasons the music industry has chosen Macs as the standard. In theory you could run everything on Windows ok, but I wouldn't bother. Don't fight it, just get a Mac, you will be saving yourself months of "stuffing around" time.

Submission + - CSRIO - Accelerating our dragon R&D program (csironewsblog.com)

sjwt writes: In some countries your government research laboratories might be held back from performing some types of programs due to political vote buying reasons, not hear in Australia.. Full steam ahead for Dragon Research!!

From the official CSRIO Blog comes..
"Over the past 87 odd years we have not been able to create a dragon or dragon eggs. We have sighted an eastern bearded dragon at one of our telescopes, observed dragonflies and even measured body temperatures of the mallee dragon. But our work has never ventured into dragons of the mythical, fire breathing variety."

Submission + - 1.5 million pages of ancient manuscripts online (ap.org)

LordWabbit2 writes: The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library have put the first of 1.5 million pages of ancient manuscripts online.
The two libraries in 2012 announced a four-year project to digitize some of the most important works of their collections of Hebrew manuscripts, Greek manuscripts and early printed books.
Among the first up on the site Tuesday, are the two-volume Gutenberg bibles from each of the libraries and a beautiful 15th-century German bible, hand-colored and illustrated by woodcuts.
The 2 million pound ($3.3 million) project is being funded by the Polonsky Foundation, which aims to democratize access to information.
The Vatican Library was founded in 1451 and is one of the most important research libraries in the world. The Bodleian is the largest university library in Britain.

Nope, that's fair. Is it just? Nope. Is it loving? Nope. Is it compassionate? Nope. Is it mercyful? Nope. Actually I guess it's really not fair after all. Is it fair that these people are sick? Nope.

If my brother was sick for 6 months and couldn't work, I'd tell him to stay at my place. After those six months were up would I demand that he pay me for those 6 months in terms or rent, medicine or food? Nope, because I'm compassionate. This is how we should treat other human beings. This is going to do your head in - but some of us do it even if they don't deserve it. It's called grace.

I play guitar in a rock band named Toehider - we supported Devin Townsend last month. It rocked.

I've interviewed the guys in Dream Theater, Trivium, Machine Head & Megadeth.

I've found over 300 geocaches, quite a few of them in other countries (Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China).

I mix sound at my church, lead one of the bands and play drums in another band. I'm teaching myself piano at the moment.

I've produced video clips for my own music and had them shown on TV. I've performed my own compositions on TV (thanks "Guitar Gods"!)

I've had a few of my songs featured on "The angry video game nerd" episodes and released an album of them on iTunes. I'm working on a second album.

I was interviewed for ABC TV's "Good Game" last year.

I'm writing a few iphone apps at the moment.

I've worked for tiny non-for-profits, huge corporations, energy companies, travel companies, entertainment companies & beer companies (man that one was goooood, free beer thursday and fridays!!).

I regularly drive my wife nuts by constantly picking up a new hobby every 6 months and then moving onto the next one.

I'm still trying to work out how I can live with myself, being so boring. In fact I think I'll just fall asleeeeeeeeep.

And BTW, all of my programming friends are just as interesting. Just like you guys on slashdot. You're ace too. Stay cool, your pal, LB.

Submission + - Call Yourself A Hacker, Lose Your 4th Amendment Rights (digitalbond.com)

An anonymous reader writes: As described on the DigitalBond blog, a security researcher was subjected to a court ordered search in which a lack of pre-notification was premised on his self description as a "hacker". From the court order, "The tipping point for the Court comes from evidence that the defendants – in their own words – are hackers. By labeling themselves this way, they have essentially announced that they have the necessary computer skills and intent to simultaneously release the code publicly and conceal their role in that act. There is some gold in this file. Some highlights:

resources['ffe.ee.myAccount.TEST'] = 'Apples to Apples';

Seems like someone was trying to work out how to add resources. Looks like they also wanted to test out the quoting:

resources['ffe.ee.myAccount.quoteTest'] = '“Apes.”';

Hmm looks like you can't update your name at the moment. I guess you could call XXX-XXXX to do it: resources['ffe.ee.myAccount.profile.updateName'] = 'To change your name you must call 1-800-XXX-XXXX';

Hey I wonder what happens when you try to login too many times incorrectly? Apparently nothing:

showAlertText :function() { //TODO: add functionality to show alert text after too many tries at log in },

I wonder who "Pod 6" is?

//$('#signUpButton').hide(); pod 6 doesn't want this hidden

And then my personal favourite, which is written twice in the code:

// make sure we don;t try to do this before the saml has been posted

Why is there a semicolon in the "don't" word? It is a typo or couldn't they figure out how to escape a single quote character in whatever is generating their JS? (This line is repeated twice) I'm guessing it was just a rushed developer who was running out of time.
