From the very start price was the biggest failing point for the Surface. They were crazy to price it at $499 WITHOUT their key marketing point...the keyboard case.
coondoggie writes: One of the companies that plans to mine asteroids in the future set a course for more immediate space exploration today by announcing a $1 million Kickstarter campaign to build a new space telescope.
MarkWhittington writes: Planetary Resources, a company that proposes to capture and mine asteroids for profit, announced on May 29, 2013 that it has started a Kickstarter campaign to finance its first Arkyd space telescopes with which it intends to find likely asteroid candidates. The goal is to raise $1 million by the end of June, 2013, which would launch the telescope, build the interfaces, and set up a variety of education programs. The idea that the first commercial space telescope will further space and science education as well as the company's business plan as various levels of sponsorship will allow one to pay for schools and museums to be given time on the telescope.

MojoKid writes "There's no doubt that gaming on the Web has improved dramatically in recent years, but Mozilla believes it has developed new technology that will deliver a big leap in what browser-based gaming can become. The company developed a highly-optimized version of Javascript that's designed to 'supercharge' a game's code to deliver near-native performance. And now that innovation has enabled Mozilla to bring Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to the browser. As a sort of proof of concept, Mozilla debuted this BananaBread game demo that was built using WebGL, Emscripten, and the new JavaScript version called 'asm.js.' Mozilla says that it's working with the likes of EA, Disney, and ZeptoLab to optimize games for the mobile Web, as well."
Emscripten was previously used to port Doom to the browser.
As a younger developer (~5 years) I often wonder what it was like to be in the industry 25 years ago, before the web is what it is today. Documentation is ALL online. I only read software books for academics or to learn something new. In order to get the job done, there is no substitute to google and/or sites like stack overflow.
SecretSquirrel33 writes: A man spotted dressed in a goat suit among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of northern Utah has wildlife officials worried he could be in danger as hunting season approaches. Coty Creighton, 33, spotted the goat man Sunday during his hike. He said he came across the herd, but noticed something odd about one goat that was trailing behind the rest. "I thought maybe it was injured," Creighton said Friday. "It just looked odd." He said he pulled out binoculars to get a closer look at the herd about 200 yards away and was shocked. The man appeared to be acting like a goat while wearing the crudely made costume, which had fake horns and a cloth mask with cut-out eye holes, Creighton said.

A new report on Monday reports that Amazon has plans to add up to five or six new tablet SKUs to its lineup. recoiledsnake writes: Apple has rejected calls for a manufacturing hardware fix to the iPhone 4 antenna woes in the highly anticipated press conference today. Instead, Apple will offer a free case to anyone who faces the issue. According to Jobs, only 0.55 % of iPhone 4 customers have contacted AppleCare with the issue and the return rate is less than that of the previous iPhones. While all phones might have a signal drop, according to Consumer Reports' findings in a RF-shielded lab, other phones tested(including the iPhone 3G) do not have the extra drop because of not having an exposed external antenna like the iPhone 4. This also jives with multiple Anandtech articles and field tests that there is indeed a problem specific to the iPhone 4 and call for Apple to fix the hardware. And just as a clarification to their devoted fanbase, Jobs included this gem: "You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either."
SecretSquirrel33 writes: Calling it a revolutionary change, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a new approach to the way its missionaries and members share the faith's message. The new launch of the website Mormon.org will take visitors directly to those people. The new mormon.org site allows you to find and read the profiles of Mormons from around the world. In some ways, this creates the reverse of knocking on doors that Latter-day Saint missionaries have been doing for more than 150 years.
On the new launch site, more than 2,000 Church members have listed their profiles and are sharing their life stories and faith. Some 1,300 more are working on creating them.
