Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Non-Profit Database Solutions

adam.voss writes: I am a computer science major one year away from my degree who has work experience in the IT field as well. I am hired for a summer fellowship at a small research non-profit where one of my many duties is to be the resident geek. They piecemeal a bunch of software systems in a way that works, but frustrates users due to poor interface and always having to find workarounds. A database seems like the logical solution (mainly survey data and contact management); however, I am the first techie beyond MS Excel/Access experience the org has had in its 5 year life. The org has no servers, so online/cloud is ideal; I have found some APIs, but I am hesitant to code something because no one could maintain it, where Excel/Access level things could be. From what I can tell this seems to be a pretty common problem for small non-profits. Is there an online/cloud equivalent to Access (Google Spreadsheets is too slow/limited)? Or some other solution people can suggest? Do I just need to convince the org they need a server and then use OOo Base? Is the only real solution to find funds to hire a full-time tech person (unlikely)?
