Dear Cory Doctorow,
Why, in the article http://boingboing.net/2012/07/28/apple-wont-carry-an-ebook-be.html does the link behind Holly's book "How To Think Sideways Lesson 6: How To Discover (Or Create) Your Story’s Market" actually link to Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0765329085/downandoutint-20 in the Amazon bookstore?

Submission + - We Are at Another Inflection Point, Says Microsoft (net-security.org)

Orome1 writes: At the RSA Conference 2012, Scott Charney, corporate VP of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, shared his vision for the road ahead as society and computing intersect in an increasingly interconnected world. Charney encouraged industry and governments to develop more effective privacy principles focused on use and accountability, improve end-to-end reliability of cloud services through increased fault modeling and standards efforts, and adopt more holistic security strategies including improved hygiene and greater attention to detection and containment. “We are at another inflection point, with expectations for better security, privacy and reliability growing at an exponential rate,” Charney said. “Now is the time for industry and governments to develop and adopt strategies and policies that balance business and societal needs with individuals’ choices.”

Submission + - Depression Lowers Brain's Plasticity

smoothjazz writes: During depression, the brain becomes less plastic and adaptable, and thus less able to perform certain tasks, like storing memories. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have now traced the brain's lower plasticity to reduced functionality in its support cells, and believe that learning more about these cells can pave the way for radical new therapies for depression

Submission + - Wall Street greed fueling high gas prices (cnn.com)

suraj.sun writes: Gas prices approaching $4 a gallon on average are causing severe economic pain for millions of Americans. Crude oil prices stood at $108 on Friday, up from only double digits at the beginning of the month. What's the cause? Forget what you may have read about the laws of supply and demand( http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/28/opinion/sanders-gas-speculation/index.html?hpt=hp_c1 ). Oil and gas prices have almost nothing to do with economic fundamentals. According to the Energy Information Administration, the supply of oil and gasoline is higher today than it was three years ago, when the national average for a gallon of gasoline was just $1.90. Meanwhile, the demand for oil in the U.S. is at its lowest level since April of 1997( http://www.businessweek.com/finance/rising-gas-prices-not-demand-driven-02142012.html ).

Is Big Oil to blame? Sure. Partly. Big oil companies have been gouging consumers for years. They have made almost $1 trillion in profits over the past decade, in part thanks to ridiculous federal subsidies and tax loopholes. But there's another reason for the wild rise in gas prices. The culprit is Wall Street. Speculators are raking in profits by gambling in the loosely regulated commodity markets for gas and oil.

Television

Submission + - Remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray a Huge Leap Forward (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "There's been no new Star Trek TV series since Enterprise limped off screens in 2005, but the huge success of the 2009 Star Trek movie and the gradual growth of Blu-ray has caught CBS' attention (CBS acquired ownership of the Star Trek franchise in 2006). The broadcast company is preparing to release Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray with substantial improvements (comparison image shots). The DVD boxed sets that exist today were created from the taped broadcasts that were shown in the early 90s. Rather than repackaging that material, CBS has gone back to the original film stock and started from scratch. The difference is enormous. CBS has released a preview Blu-ray titled Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Next Level with three updated episodes; the show's pilot (Encounter at Farpoint), Sins of the Father and The Inner Light."

Comment But, What if it *was* a real MAFIAA honeypot. (Score 1) 340

Ignore all the facebook angles, consider if someone actually wanted to build database of known copyright infringers (I refuse to use "pirate" since it isn't hijacking ships on the open seas)...

Scenario: MAFIAA would like a "high value target" database of IPs to check each time a new high-value release comes out.
1. MAFIAA have zero IPs today.
2. MAFIAA "front" puts out a "History of Torrent Downloads By IP"
3. "We" check it - and hand them our IP, which they add to the database.
3a. Whatever the site tells you back when you check is irrelevant.

When high-value release is made:
1. Pass IP database to associates who have the tools to port probe looking for torrent ports and query what they are seeding.
2. Pass confirmed hits IPs to the "Collections" dept for letters to ISPs and/or John Doe lawsuits.

Probing a few hundred thousand people who thought "crap, did they catch me?" is all of a sudden so much easier and your paranoia ironically leads to you being caught.

Displays

Submission + - Nanoresonators create ultra-high-res displays (linuxfordevices.com)

TuurlijkNiet writes: Eat your heart out, 'Retina display'. A new technology unveiled yesterday will allow creating pixels eight times smaller than the ones on Apple's iPhone 4, eliminate the need for polarizer layers, and allow screens to make much more efficient use of available light, say University of Michigan researchers. The pixels in the nanoresonator displays are about ten times smaller than those on a typical computer screen, and about eight times smaller than the pixels on the iPhone 4, which are about 78 microns, according to Guo. Such pixel densities could make the technology useful in projection displays, as well as wearable, bendable or extremely compact displays, according to the researchers.
