This is of course true, but in some countries people may not have learned to be critical. On the contrary: I am not sure if this is the case for India but in some countries people are taught from a very young age to trust the (usually state owned) media.

The things these researchers use are not bubbles. Not even close. As usual, science reports by journalists and PR offices are terrible.

I don't think its true that in marketing bigger numbers are better. Not if you are marketing something like using LESS fuel. But even if you are right, I think the issue here is that if they started with a boeing 747 and then decrease the number, sooner or later they would have to start using fractions or negative numbers.

All science is data driven. Without data there is no hypothesis, and without hypothesis there is nothing to test (falsify). This is just another hype, like nanotechnology or now nanobiotechnology etc. Nearly all molecules are nanoscale: their size is measured in nanometers, and in the same way all science is data driven.

There is nothing wrong with good old "science driven science" where people think, do experiments, and think again.

Many scientific discoveries are done by accident. This is simply one of them: a new solar powered weapon against birds. They should install one in the big city squares instead of the desert to solve the problems with pigeons.
