Submission + - Grand Canyon no longer 6,000+ years old

HOW OLD IS THE GRAND CANYON? PARK SERVICE WON'T SAY — Orders to Cater to Creationists Makes National Park Agnostic on Geology
Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees.
Also,
Park officials have defended the decision to approve the sale of Grand Canyon: A Different View, claiming that park bookstores are like libraries, where the broadest range of views are displayed. ... "As one park geologist said, this is equivalent of Yellowstone National Park selling a book entitled Geysers of Old Faithful: Nostrils of Satan,"
How very sad. Thank you Bush Administration and Creationists for deliberately dumbing down our country and its citizens. If they are selling that book at the gift shoppe, they should also sell the alternate book explaining how and when the FSM carved the Grand Canyon with His noodly appendage."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Hal Turner vs. Anonymous

Peterus7 writes: "White Supremacist Radio host Hal Turner has entered an epic internet war with people from 7chan, 4chan, and ebaumsworld, as well as other websites. It first started with prank calls and a wannabe DDoS attack that forced him to move to a blogspot account. What's fueled the fire is his reactions, including posting a picture of a kid with a bloody face and claiming he was behind it. Turns out he took that picture from an Extreme Wrestling website. Way to go, Hal."

Journal Journal: My problem with apple 3

Okay I'll admit it, the Apple commercials are starting to get to me. They're extremely misleading. That's not to say that there aren't good things to say about Apple and OS X. However, the recent stock option investigation at Apple has reminded me that they are just another American corporation and their tactics aren't always as friendly as they seem.

Education

Submission + - Funding your education through marriage

Sevvillian writes: Instead of getting a new blender or matching plates, some couples are electing to get their college bills paid when they get hitched. Education Registry.com is trying to help newlyweds that actually want something useful as a wedding gift to get it- financial freedom is so much more appealing than that orange squeezer your aunt was eyeing. The concept is simple: A couple signs up, creates a page with information on their wedding, education/career details, what their education costs are, etc, and then asks for donations towards the education costs. Then the couple emails it to family and loved ones, and they simply give a cash donation the fund, and a check is posted on the date the couple chooses. If any money comes in afterwards, an email goes out asking when to send it. This can be set up in conjunction with a traditional wedding registry, or solo.

Submission + - Parasite makes us dumber or sexier

odie_q writes: It has long been known that the Toxoplasma gondii parasite alters its host's behaviour, but now it seems the way it alters it depends on the sex of the host. From the article, "A common parasite can increase a women's attractiveness to the opposite sex but also make men more stupid, an Australian researcher says.", and further, "Infected men have lower IQs, achieve a lower level of education and have shorter attention spans. They are also more likely to break rules and take risks, be more independent, more anti-social, suspicious, jealous and morose, and are deemed less attractive to women. On the other hand, infected women tend to be more outgoing, friendly, more promiscuous, and are considered more attractive to men compared with non-infected controls."

So, next time you want to score with a chick, slip some... eh.. cat feces in her drink.

Journal Journal: Malaria due to 'climate change'? 17

Heard on the radio earlier, someone had written an article claiming that increases in malaria were due to 'global warming'/'climate change' or some such nonsense.

How about it is increasing because DDT is no longer allowed to be used to kill the mosquitos that spread malaria? I think the person on the radio was making the same point.

Submission + - MIT: Plug-in Hybrid Cars Will Save the Grid

shorebird writes: "Tech. Review has a fascinating and suprising discussion of the implications of widespread adoption of the widely promised, and well-hyped, plug-in hybrid vehicle technology. http://www.technologyreview.com/Energy/17930/page1 /
From the article's opening paragraph: "Major automakers and the Department of Energy are pouring money into research on plug-in hybrid vehicles... Although critics have warned that the vehicles could put too much pressure on an already strained electrical grid, experts are now arguing that rather than being a strain on the grid, plug-in hybrids may actually help prevent brownouts, cut the cost of electricity, and increase the use of renewable energy."
Also from the article, according to the DOE's Pacific Northwestern National Laboratory, "there is enough excess generating capacity during the night and morning to allow more than 80 percent of today's vehicles to make the average daily commute solely using this electricity. If plug-in-hybrid or all-electric-car owners charge their vehicles at these times, the power needed for about 180 million cars could be provided simply by running these plants at full capacity.""
