What you're saying only applies if the people communicating are not all sharing the same server.

As long as there is proper encryption between the clients and server, if you have members of a research group who all belong to the same organization (say, Uinv. of Hawaii) who need to exchange emails with (and only with) each other which contain confidential material, why on earth shouldn't they use a properly configured and managed server controlled by their organization?

Seems like a maximum of 400k is a rather limited amount of life insurance if you're planning to simultaneously cover your lost income for your spouse and also plan to put your kid(s) through schools that could cost upwards of $100k/year 18 years from now (with the current rates of college tuition inflation). Are there other options that service members have in addition to SGLI?

Hey... nine months of pregnancy and giving birth have to count for something, right?

Yes. Your mom popped out a smart geek boy. We need more of those in the world. They make excellent friends on the whole, and they don't scream and run away when I invite them over to hang out with a bunch of my female friends. :)

My thought exactly. There are plenty of medical conditions that prevent people from typing in any meaningful way. My two sons both have duchenne muscular dystrophy, and likely, in the future, won't have the strength to type, yet their brains will still be fully functional. Something like this may give them the opportunity to still be productive later in their lives.

Submission + - Giant Constrictors Threaten US Ecosystems

Hugh Pickens writes: "Live Science reports that the US Geological Survey (USGS) has assessed the ecological risks of nine giant non-native snake species if they were ever established in the United States and determined that five of them, the Burmese python, northern and southern African python, boa constrictor and yellow anaconda pose a high risk to ecosystems in the US while the reticulated python, Deschauensee’s anaconda, green anaconda and Beni anaconda, constitute lesser threats in these areas, but still are potentially serious threats. The high risk snakes "mature early, produce large numbers of offspring, travel long distances, and have broad diets that allow them to eat most native birds and mammals,” increasing their risk to ecosystems, Both Burmese pythons and boa constrictors have already been documented as reproducing in the wild in South Florida, with population estimates for Burmese pythons in the tens of thousands,. Mature individuals of the largest species — Burmese, reticulated, and northern and southern African pythons — have been documented as attacking and killing people in the wild in their native range (PDF), though such unprovoked attacks appear to be quite rare, similar to the threat experienced in the US with alligators. “This report clearly reveals that these giant snakes threaten to destabilize some of our most precious ecosystems and parks, primarily through predation on vulnerable native species,” says Dr. Robert Reed, a coauthor of the report adding that "at present, the only probable pathway by which these species would become established in the United States is the pet trade.""

Submission + - Penny Arcade Expo-E For All Expo Conflict

John Callaham writes: "IDG World Expo announced that the 2008 edition of their video-PC game event E For All Expo would be held in the last weekend of August, which happens to be the traditional date for the Penny Arcade Expo as well. FiringSquad has some info on how Penny Arcade's organisers feel about the conflict (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?s earchid=15677) and also that IDG is now willing to chat with PAX's organisers to resolve the conflict (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?s earchid=15680)"

Submission + - CCP Employees Caught Tampering With EVE - Again

radi0w0mbat writes: "EVE-Online forums were closed by CCP today after allegations by GoonFleet that CCP employees had played favorites in the ongoing war in zerosec, rigged role-playing events, and used their employee accesses to covertly join and gain director status in player corporations. This is not the first time CCP employees have been caught doing favors for their in-game friends; a previous incident led to the termination of a CCP employee and the formation of CCP's Internal Affairs office. Many GoonFleet members openly state their belief that the game is rigged in favor of older players and their alliances, pointing to the deployment of Titans, hideously expensive (costing roughly $6000 in real-world money) ships that even CCP developers recently conceded are ludicrously powerful and unbalanced in terms of gameplay. GoonFleet is an alliance made up primarily of Something Awful forum members that has grown from a handful of n00b players to one of the major alliances in the game in a little less than two years."
