See, the thing is, you're reading that I actually need .docx, which I haven't actually said anywhere. I do fine with PDF. I don't quite know who you're arguing with to be honest. What I was stating is that using a freely available open document format would be better overall, since I happen to know for a fact that unemployment offices here are running LibreOffice. I also happen to know that businesses usually are running MS Office, because of concerns they have about software support (or because that's just what their XP machines came with in 2001). Furthermore, I know that a lot of older people, who were let go in the height of the financial crisis, have little to no experience with computers and do not know how to use "Print to PDF".

But mate, cheers for the MS Office sales pitch.

It's not so much that the user is a moron, and as I've stated I do convert to PDF with LibreOffice, which you would know if you read the entire text. However, I've seen jobs as low as cleaning assistant require PDF. Now you obviously are of some sort of superior intellect, being able to use MS Office and all to its full extent. That does not mean that 58 year old Betty, that's been laid off from the paper factory and has 7 years to go until retirement, knows how to perform this action.

But you, kind sir, are a marvel of a modern human. Who would have imagined that there's a plugin for that.

Yes, I did actually try it. Messes my CV up quite badly, especially the version with the sometimes required picture.

Personally, I as a man would be thrilled if someone complemented my ass at work. I'd probably draw the line at slapping and pinching though... especially from the other male co-workers. That would just be awkward.

I really hope this catches on with businesses as well. I'm writing a lot of job applications at the moment, and being financially challenged I'm doing the work from LIbre Office. If I convert my application and CV to .doc or .docx the formatting will be all wrong when a potential employer reads it. Therefor I've been converting everything to PDF before sending. I'm starting to see job ads now that actually require people to deliver in PDF, most likely for the same exact reason, but I'm not entirely sure everyone can figure out how to convert a doc/docx/odf to PDF.

There are a lot of people out there with very limited computer skills, so I think a well supported open document standard will be good for everyone in the long run.

I think it's a great idea for Apple to put vital stats monitors in their devices. I do however think they're missing a trick. Apple, if you're listening: Remote kill switch that actually kills the user of the device!

I don't do any coding these days, so I basically get by with Firefox and Skype. I'm thinking of getting rolling again in the creative field though, so if anyone wants to recommend decent video editing software for Linux and/or Windows please leave a comment.

Man it's like a dream come true. Windows 8 interface AND Bing! Maybe they can bundle it onto free software downloads, like they do with the Conduit/Bingbar browser hijack. Then we won't even have to download it ourselves. Man that's top notch service!

I've got one of those cheap hp multi machines. I think I've used the printer like 2 times. The scanner I've used a lot, since I hate sending documents via snailmail. Then someone else can spend a fortune printing it on the other end.

All I really want is a straight forward classic desktop environment. I wouldn't call myself extremely techie, but I can figure out how to tweek the usability part myself, given the right tools. I felt gnome 2 gave me that, while gnome 3 just left me annoyed and confused. If I want a DE that just pisses me off every time I log on, I can just go get a copy of Windows Vista.

For now I spend most of my time on Windows 7, because it's not completely hopeless. Have been looking at Cinnamon lately though. I've always loved what the Linux Mint team has brought to the table, so it doesn't come as a surprise to me that it looks good and is easy to use. Only problem there is that my ATI card isn't completely happy with it, so I get a 2-3 sec freeze once in a while. As I'm not super techie (as mentioned above), I currently don't know how to solve that. If anyone knows a fix (like turning something on or off) please leave a comment.

I switched ISP a bit over a year ago because of crappy provided hardware and bad tech support. I basically had a wireless-b modem which wasn't able to keep a steady signal to my laptop which usually was within 3 meters without walls or obstacles in the way. I contacted the support and they told me to use WPA instead of WPA2 to solve the issue *facepalm*. I ended up hooking a cheap wireless-n router to their crappy modem, then contacted another ISP and got a cheaper and faster plan (which hadn't been available when I got the original plan)... problem solved, and I ended up saving a penny and getting faster internet on top of it all. I guess I should thank that useless tech support agent.

In 50 years we will only remember Microsoft Bob.

When you're at the bottom, there's no where to go but up, so I have high hopes for 2012 :)
