If we were using base 3, we'd have 3, 9, 27 (as these are the corresponding values for 10, 100, and 1000 - which would be 2, 4, and 8 in binary). Note that 3 in trinary would be 20 (which wouldn't exist in binary)
Maybe we're switching to base 6
