Submission + - "Top-Down Causation" could Explain the Presence of Order in the Universe

eagletonian writes: In a recent interview mathematician George Ellis questioned the "bottom up" causation paradigm prevalent in science, where forces between particles are considered the only kind of physical causation from which chemistry, biology, and even our minds are emergent. Instead Ellis argues in favor of the possibility that " these emergent higher level structures, such as cells, neurons, and the brain, have causal powers in their one right". This "top-down causation" recognizes that higher levels can control the lower levels by setting constraints on lower level interactions. You can find details of Ellis theory in his paper published in the Annals of Physics.

Submission + - 1.5 million pages of ancient manuscripts online (ap.org)

LordWabbit2 writes: The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library have put the first of 1.5 million pages of ancient manuscripts online.
The two libraries in 2012 announced a four-year project to digitize some of the most important works of their collections of Hebrew manuscripts, Greek manuscripts and early printed books.
Among the first up on the site Tuesday, are the two-volume Gutenberg bibles from each of the libraries and a beautiful 15th-century German bible, hand-colored and illustrated by woodcuts.
The 2 million pound ($3.3 million) project is being funded by the Polonsky Foundation, which aims to democratize access to information.
The Vatican Library was founded in 1451 and is one of the most important research libraries in the world. The Bodleian is the largest university library in Britain.

Submission + - Research Paper suggest Titan once had swamps / wetlands (sciencedirect.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: Scientists from the department of Physics and Space Science of the Florida Institute of Technology and Applied Physics Laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University have published a paper outlining the possibility that Titan, a moon of Planet Saturn, may housed swamps / wetlands on it.

They based their findings on the impact craters on the moon are located mainly on unusually high elevation on the moon.

Their theory is that impact that have landed in the lower elevation might have been cushioned by " a shallow marine environment or a saturated layer of sediments more than several hundred meters thick " which would result in crater morphologies similar to those that have been found in the terrestrial submarine impacts (on Planet Earth), thus making them difficult to observe by the Cassini spacecraft

Jet Force Gemini had something similar, in that a sidekick could help you by shoting enemies, but as the game had creatures you had to rescue alive, the sidekick shouldn't be a baby. Also, it had some sections entirely built for the sidekick, which was a bit of a break in the gameflow actually.
