Very very true! I'm not a C++ guy, but everytime I got put on a different COBOL project, I had to adjust to a different way of doing it.

IIRC, I got a machine in that era that had an autoexec.bat already set up. One of the first things I did was comment out the "win".

COBOL is a very readable language. That didn't stop people from writing code that could rival the worst Perl code as far as understanding it went.

I agree that writing Java is not much fun.

My state doesn't put the SSN on the driver's license, but it did for years. By now I'd guess every 2-bit hacker from here to Russia probably has it. :-P

The funny thing is that the groups that actually make up the democratic coalition are opposed to one another. Should the GOP go to demographic ill-relevance, the Democratic party will likely splinter.

For example:

Hispanics and blacks are at odds with one another for jobs and public resources. Hispanics have pushed blacks out of some of their historical neighborhoods.
Women's rights are at odds with muslim beliefs.
Asian's are at odds with other non-white demographics over AA admissions and democratic economic policies run counter to asian entrepreneurs.
Gay rights are at odds with hispanic and black religious beliefs.

The Republican party has the perception of being the party of white people, largely because they are indifferent to minorities, not because they advocate for whites. Its not like they are going to embrace being the white party because they are afraid of being called racists. A clever Republican politician could play those democratic groups against one another, but would probably take a lot of heat for doing so.

People don't seem to have that issue when it comes to social security though.

Yup. And it's not just true for the President. My city recently had a primary for mayor. The 3 choices were the current mayor, with a history of raising taxes and spending on "projects" while neglecting failing infrastructure, a crazy guy who doesn't even LIVE in the city, and some guy nobody's ever heard of. The crazy guy got eliminated, so the big race will be between the status quo and the no-name guy. I don't think no-name has a chance.

It's possible for a programmer to write good documentation, but only if:

1. They're writing it for other programmers, preferably ones already familiar with the product.
2. They're able to think like a non-programmer.

#2 is very rare, IME.

Compared to what? C might be high-level compared to Assembler, but it was low-level compared to Basic, Fortran, and COBOL.

Well, people in the middle of their farms, milking their cow with a pitchfork sticking out their back pocket, aren't usually considered tech-savvy themselves, even if they DON'T use AOL. :)
