Submission + - Stand And Deliver students helping their teacher (npr.org)

decora writes: NPR's reports that former students of Jaime Escalante, the guy who taught calculus to barrio kids, are coming to his aid in his battle with cancer. Escalante's savings have been depleted by his treatment and so his former students have rallied to support him in his final days. Edward James Olmos, who played him in the 1988 film Stand and Deliver, is also helping out, saying that after all Escalante has done for others, the least we can do is to give him 'comfort and dignity'.
