I don't know if it's a city ordinance or state law here, but when something is placed out for trash, it becomes the property of the city. It is actually illegal to remove anything from a trash pile or trashcan without the original owner's permission, and doing so will get you fined.

In this case, based on TFA(s), it looks like the plaque with the moon rocks was removed from the museum property by either the kid or his dad, and the dad was quite possibly complicit in the theft to not report it (to the museum, police, etc) or return the plaque when he discovered his son had it.

Heh. Trust me, outsourcing IT is NOT a good idea if you're looking for a more open, accessible system. My experience with them is beyond "not invented here" and more "Yes, you pay us but you will use only what we support and screw you if you want anything else like say OS or Office upgrades." Contracted IT services can be a major headache. You want Windows 7? sorry, you're stuck with XP until we certify Win7 for our network. Office 2010? not allowed until we have vetted and tested it thoroughly...which means (for either of those upgrades) at least a year, probably two, after release until the contractor will even consider allowing them on the PCs or the network they support.

Microsoft did not own bing.com until March 4, 2009 when the domain ownership changed from "Davryn Pty Ltd" in Melbourne, Australia to Microsoft. Since 2002 the name bing.com has had several owners, including some guy in Michigan, someone in Denver; Palo Alto, CA; was transferred to an Australian company in 2007 until MS bought it in 2009. So no, Microsoft does not have long-standing claims on the Bing name, at least based on their domain registration.

There were some initial problems with the JRE and AdBlock extension for Firefox. If you updated the JRE and disabled extensions it would work. Nowadays, however, all the pieces seem to be playing nicely together and I haven't had any problems making deposits in the last year. I had some entertaining times when it wouldn't work in Fx, then wouldn't work in IE, then FX did work and such, but that was all shortly after the Deposit@Home service started (a few years ago now).

You haven't been paying attention to the AV vendors for long have you? in 1997 McAfee merged with Network General and became Network Associates (nai.com) which also sold Sniffer. Then, in April 2004, McAfee became McAfee again when NAI tried to sell off the Sniffer product/Network General component (which was purchased by NetScout in November 2004). McAfee continued using the nai.com domain until June 30th of 2004, when archive.org shows nai.com redirecting to mcafee.com for the first time. vil.nai.com has been the Network Associates/McAfee Virus Information Library (and now the more generic "Threat Library") since at least 1999. (Incidentally, the "top 10 virus threats" in Oct 1999 included "Laroux", "Melissa" and "Happy99". My, how far we've come....)

Not my project but a friend of mine works on the FrontMotion Firefox Community Edition project:

"FrontMotion Firefox Community Edition is a customized version of Firefox with the ability to lockdown settings through Active Directory using Administrative Templates. Similar to lockdown settings with mozilla.cfg on one computer, you can now use Administrative Templates to enforce settings across your organization. Use Firefox on your corporate computers to decrease virus incidents and increase overall security. Save time and frustration with our installer that is targeted toward the corporate IT administrator with manageability and upgradeability in mind."

I've never used it but it's sure something I'm considering testing for my network environment.
