Perhaps they put some effort into the GUI to establish a brand image of sorts before the Open Source Community got their hands on it, wouldn't you? They got Paid because they had the initiative to start it, that's how it works. Also, the amount they got paid is kind of representative of the amount of demand out there for an alternative to Facebook - So

"Facebook's so annoying to use. Let's make one that works like we ALL want!"

FTFY...

They announced they would release a semi-working version's code, and that's exactly what they did. Their "mission statement" has a large emphasis on security so i sincerely doubt they will allow another major release with a "Patched" backend. The open source community Is large enough and kind enough to contribute where they may have fallen short. If you want to get paid for helping, you may want to go start your own.

on a gram by gram basis Corella Algae is actually like SUPER nutritious. NASA i think experimented with using it for long space flights in the 60/70's. So your body can function longer running on a tomato-sized amount of algae than it could on an actual tomato.

Ancient alien conspirators actually believe that the Holy Grail was actually a Manna Machine that produced this kind of algae. Fun Fact..

kinda skimmed the article but i think hes getting at the idea that it's a good supplement and could have potential in enriching foods.

Submission + - Murdoch's Paywall: The results ain't pretty at all (techdirt.com)

phonewebcam writes: The bad news (ho! ho!) is starting to come out regarding Murdoch's paywall experiment, and as usual its money doing the talking — in this case the advertisers have finally realised there's no point advertising to nobody, so are boycotting in droves. To make things worse, the actual suppliers of the news stories are beginning to avoid giving their scoops and interviews to the Times since no search engines can pick them up:

"Faced with a collapse in traffic to thetimes.co.uk, some advertisers have simply abandoned the site. Rob Lynam, head of press trading at the media agency MEC, whose clients include Lloyds Banking Group, Orange, Morrisons and Chanel, says, "We are just not advertising on it. If there's no traffic on there, there's no point in advertising on there." Lynam says he has been told by News International insiders that traffic to The Times site has fallen by 90 per cent since the introduction of charges."

Submission + - UK Taxman to take everything, refund some (telegraph.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: The UK tax office is looking into the possibility of having every PAYE earner, having their wage paid directly to the Tax man (who currently is messing up 20% of all said tax payers). Instead of employers deducting income tax then paying gross salaries to employees, the gross monthly payment would go to an HMRC-run tax “calculator”, which would then pass the net salary to the worker. The reform would mean the end of traditional monthly payslips, because employers would no longer be able to tell workers how much tax they had paid each month. A very dangerous start towards them taking the shirt of your back as well
