Submission + - Will Ubuntu lead the next generation of Desktop ?

donadony writes: Open source technologies too are definitely part of the micro-evolution of the conventional desktop functionalities. In the case of Ubuntu, the open source software backed by Canonical, which has been a fast adaptor to emerging technologies with three verticals- cloud, thinner client computing and business consumer based-technologies, users have an alternative to the influence of Windows. From the standpoint of Ubuntu’s adaptability to desktop computing, it is positively poised to determine the next generation of desktops. This is largely because desktop computing, is fast emerging as to be happening in anything but the machine itself and Ubuntu is defining these capabilities to become the desktop of the future.

Submission + - LPS-A Linux disto from the US Department of Defens

donadony writes: The Lightweight Portable Security distribution was created by the Software Protection Initiative under the direction of the Air Force Research Laboratory and the US Department Of Defense. The idea behind it is that government workers can use a CDROM or USB stick to boot into a tamper proof, pristine desktop when using insecure computers such as those available in hotels or a worker’s own home. The environment that it offers should be largely resistant to Internet-borne security threats such as viruses and spyware, particularly when launched from read-only media such as a CDROM. The LPS system does not mount the hard drive of the host machine, so leaves no trace of the user’s activities behind.

Submission + - 8 ways in which Google Plus can be a Facebook Kill (googez.com)

AyeshaAhmed writes: "Google Plus is not aimed to be a Facebook killer, actually. The project can be simplified as “fun and easy, and more to private way to share things with friends” and it’s not just friends, you can share anything with anyone may it be your colleagues, your family, your employees or anyone. But naturally, anything aimed at sharing and social networking is unintentionally compared to the now standard Facebook! But personally I feel Google Plus, unlike buzz and Orkut can be a stronger rival."

donadony writes: This is a biased post. Biased towards FREE people using the FREE internet! And certainly against the blogging policies of being neutral, but no harms! Everyone is changing the policies; Microsoft is being altruistic supporting its ultimate rivals – the open source community; and hence changing its policies. If the IT tycoons are changing their policies then why not tiny bloggers!

Submission + - Linux's Twenty years of Achievement and Success (unixmen.com)

donadony writes: If you think about it, most of us have grown up using Linux. Linux was not how software was done, 20 years ago. There was only paid software, as Stallman so famously said in 1983 and went on to lay the foundation of the Free Software Foundation with the GNU Project that was compatible with all available software. However, the GNU took its time to evolve and had basic structures-compilers, text, Unix shell etc. but elements daemons, device drivers including the kernel were stuttering to completion.

Submission + - Open source Kimono Lanterns to the rescue

An anonymous reader writes: The devastation in Japan is heart rending and compels each of one of us to contribute to help improve the situation. Similar thoughts have been running through developers at Freaklabs . At the hackerspace they are involved with, a solar rechargeable lantern was designed for garden and patio use. Called the Kimono Lantern, today they are able to put it to better use. Donating the complete design to the open source hardware community, they are indeed standing true to the commitments of the Open Source community.
