Comment What are the real causes of ice cap growth/retreat (Score 1) 412

I think the general public and most posters here don't fully grasp the problem (nor do I) My basic scientific curiosity tells me that there must be multiple parameters that contribute to the size of the ice cap. These might include things like seasonal temperature variation combined with precipitation patterns. I never hear any of these parameters discussed. So is there a reason, and does the size depend only on temperature?

For instance, if Costco signs a contract for delivery of a million drives in Feburary, the factory floods in March, and Costco gets delivery in April, their drives are suddenly worth substantially more. They can either sell them at the previously intended prices, or they can raise prices to market value....

What about the flip where they sign a contract and the market price falls. They are now holding a loss. Who is going to cover that? I assume that the future contracts upside/downside cancel out. If they don't take the profit from the good market swings they can't cover the loss from the bad market swings.

Just sayin...

A paranoid individual might believe that "bad guys" use such devices to monitor neighborhoods for activity and know when to schedule the robbery.

In this case the "they" is some 3rd party that gains information neither you nor the electric utility intended.

A professor in a pub tells a story about a student that doesn't pay attention to details in class. This student builds a sound canceling box... He puts it in a concert hall on a performance night. The crowd erupts into applause and there is nothing but silence. The professor explains that the student forgot that energy could not be created or destroyed. The sound had to go somewhere. So this little box was not just canceling the sound, it was "absorbing" it. The box explodes...

Fiction of course but I remember really liking the stories because they always had some different perspective. I read the book years ago and can't remember the title or author?

Transparent Aluminum Is "New State of Matter" 406

Professor_Quail writes with this interesting excerpt: "Oxford scientists have created a transparent form of aluminum by bombarding the metal with the world's most powerful soft X-ray laser. 'Transparent aluminum' previously only existed in science fiction, featuring in the movie Star Trek IV, but the real material is an exotic new state of matter with implications for planetary science and nuclear fusion."

Google Open Sources Wave Protocol Implementation 183

eldavojohn writes "Certainly one of the most important steps in adopting a protocol is a working open source example of it. Well, google has open sourced an implementation of the wave protocol for those of you curious about Google's new collaboration and conversation platform. It's been reviewed, skewered and called 'Anti-Web' but now's your chance to see a Java implementation of it. The article lists it as still rapidly evolving so it might not be prudent to buy into it yet. Any thumbs up or thumbs down from actual users of the new protocol?"

Finally, a True Green Laser 274

dusty writes "Remember those green lasers from Star Wars? Turns out that faking green lasers has been easy for years, but making true green laser diodes has been the stuff of science fiction. Until recently, that is. Now researchers from Japan have created the world's first true green laser diode. Until now, only red and blue laser diodes were available, and now with the addition of green, new TVs and projectors that are more efficient can be produced. And if you were wondering how green lasers pointers are already produced, it is a hack that involved doubling the frequency of an infrared laser. The new true green laser diodes have much higher efficiency than the current 6%, leading many to expect big time laser display breakthroughs in the near future. Ars Technica has a well-written article on this breakthrough."

Submission + - Be the first to photograph an aurigid meteor (seti.org)

rmelton writes: "As previously mentioned on http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/0 8/1830257 The long period comet
"Kiess" laid down debris that will create an unusual meteor shower Sept 1st visible from the western US. These
meteors have never been photographed. Using a ditital camera with long exposure you should be able to
capture images of these meteors. Seti is looking for a picture of the brightest of these.
Chances are that an amateur will catch the brightest Aurigid out there. Even simple cameras can
provide information about how the meteoroids break apart. The color separation can be used as a
simple spectrometer to indicate the meteor composition.
