tsamsoniw writes: Potentially boosting the iPad's standing in the business world, StarNet — a 20-plus-year-old maker of X11 connectivity products — has unveiled an X11 client called iLiveX, designed to transform iPads into X terminals for mainframe-based Linux and Unix applications. Basically, it enables users to transfer server-based Linux application sessions between their desktops and their iPads. The client also lets users get at a hosted virtual Linux desktop to use Firefox (which means Flash on the iPad) and OpenOffice. Even with a new level of access to enterprise apps, just how productive can a user really be on the keyboardless, mouseless iPad?

Samsung Mobile will release more information about the Galaxy Tab on September 2 in advance of IFA Berlin 2010. Tab will run on Android 2.2 and feature full Web-browsing and video calling. The information given by the company implied that the Galaxy Tab will sport an HD screen for video, Flash support, support for e-books, possible GPS navigation, and PC linking.

Kilrah_il writes: Apperantly not satisfied with the current scope of the DMCA, RIAA President Cary Sherman wants to broaden the scope of the law to have content providers such as YouTube and Rapidshare liable for illegal content found on their sites. "The RIAA would strongly prefer informal agreements inked with intermediaries... We're working on [discussions with broadband providers], and we'd like to extend that kind of relationship--not just to ISPs, but [also to] search engines, payment processors, advertisers...[But], if legislation is an appropriate way to facilitate that kind of cooperation, fine."
Notice the update at the end of the article pointing out that Sherman is seeking for voluntary agreements with said partners and not to enact broader laws without their cooperation.

Toyota is making the Prius a little noisier to try to make pedestrians a little safer. The automaker is answering complaints that pedestrians can't hear the hybrid auto approaching by adding a new electronic humming device. It will be available in Japan later this month...Toyota is still deciding whether to offer it overseas. The device costs about $150, plus installation charges.

This Facebook 3.2 app for iPhone does not works on those jailbroken iPhone devices which have BiteSMS app installed. This might have created a compatibility issue. You would have to uninstall BiteSMS from your iPhone or you can follow the steps below to fix this problem:......

The arrival of the online service, which allowed Mac-toting gamers to play some of the same games as their PC brethren, in some cases cross-platform, created a great deal of debate between the two camps, with the PC crowd pillorying Mac fans for the relatively poor performance of their expensive hardware. Now it seems that Apple has gotten the message, as they have provided a graphics update for OS X Snow Leopard which will make progress toward closing the gap between the two platforms."

Signatories include free software luminaries Andrew Tridgell and Jonathan Oxer. In 2008 the Australian government began a Review of Patentable Subject Matter. While we missed the 2009 public consultation period, we hope to influence the government's response to the Review, due in February 2011. The letter will be presented to Minister Kim Carr in early August."

But we cannot find anything to do with it except surf the Web, check out Facebook and play the idiotic Farmville. We've lost sight of the power of the desktop, laments Dvorak, and have instead been seduced by 'dipstick apps that really do very little except amuse monkeys.' The computer is not an appliance, he argues, and requiring training in its use and operation should be required. No doubt he'd approve of Dave Winer's recent call for every person who graduates with a bachelor's degree to have one semester of programming.

Cancer Cells Detected Using $400 Digital Camera 90

fergus07 writes "Researchers have detected oral cancer cells using a fiber-optic cable and an off-the-shelf Olympus E-330 camera worth $400. The work by Rice University biomedical engineers and researchers from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center could improve access to diagnostic imaging tools in many parts of the world where these expensive resources are scarce. In the tests, a common fluorescent dye was used to make cell nuclei glow brightly and images were taken using the tip of the fiber-optic bundle attached to the camera. The distorted nuclei, which indicate cancerous and pre-cancerous cells, could then be distinguished on the camera's LCD monitor."
