The British rag The Daily Mail has been coming up in Google News with the above linked story.

It is incredibly faulty; it's propaganda. The headline screams "The terrible truth about cannabis: Expert's devastating 20-year study finally demolishes claims that smoking pot is harmless".

The signatories to that letter in Lancet are willing to shoulder any monetary and/or criminal penalties that, in the future, come about because doctors and pharmaceutical makers haven't followed eatablished best practices in pursuit of effective Ebola treatments.

The solution is to use proper coding practices—in this case, the judicious use of quotation marks. Quotation marks are used in the shell environment to make sure that the data inside the quotes is not interpreted by the program as a command.

The solution is to never make assumptions about input that's being provided by an unknown user. It doesn't matter if we're talking about shellshock, or sql back ends, or powershell scripts - you simply can't assume your users are all good hearted and/or competent.

By the way, given they likely only went looking for similar Windows related bugs after shellshock became known - this vulnerability was a pretty good catch.

Plants don't need sunlight, they just need light. Scientists and engineers (Michael Massimino, the engineer who fixed the Hubble, praised it) who have been in space say they see nothing unrealistic about Andy Wier's The Martian.
