Comment An "Open" Cellular Network? No Thanks. (Score 1) 322

Who cares if cellphone carriers want to maintain tight control of their network?

I'm very happy with the stability and predictability of the cellular network, and I have no interest in seeing it clotted up with some god-awful Bittorrent-ish thing that some kid invented so that he could avoid paying for ringtones or whatever. I would greatly prefer that my phone continues to be reliable than that the cellular networks are allowed to degenerate until they work as poorly as the internet.

Those of you with ATT service may not understand this distinction.

RasputinAXP writes "Verizon has changed their FiOS AUP effective yesterday, and added an interesting new clause to their specific examples that we're all familiar with: 'it is a violation of the Agreement and this AUP to ... post off-topic information on message boards, chat rooms or social networking sites.' At this point, every FiOS-based Slashdot user is breaking the new AUP."

An anonymous reader writes: ZeroTurnaround released a report from a survey of 1100+ Java EE developers, showing that on average, developers spend 3-7 workweeks (40-hours each), per year, waiting for code changes to redeploy, each redeploy takes 2.5 minutes (they show data per container too), and developers redeploy 5 times per hour. Jetty is the fastest, WebSphere is the slowest. Size of apps is a likely influencer. Is this specific to Java or is building/deploying a whale in the room?

Barence writes: "Mozilla has announced that its plans to bring Office 2007's Ribbon interface to Firefox, as it looks to tidy up its "dated" browser. "Starting with Vista, and continuing with Windows 7, the menu bar is going away," notes Mozilla in its plans for revamping the Firefox user interface. "[It will] be replaced with things like the Windows Explorer contextual strip, or the Office Ribbon, [which is] now in Paint and WordPad, too." The change will also bring Windows' Aero Glass effects to the browser."

D1gital_Prob3 writes: "September 22, 2009 — PCGames.de is reporting Wolfenstein, the latest iteration on the classic first-person shooter from Activision, is being recalled from retails shelves in Germany due to the inclusion of the swastika symbol found somewhere in the game. The German version was supposed to have all symbols removed.

Exact details are a bit fuzzy at the moment, as most of this information is coming via translation; however, it's believed Activision is going to make a statement on this matter this week.

As Planet Wolfenstein points out, two developers on the project, Raven Software and Endrant, have both been part of massive employee layoffs recently. If the German version needs to be edited, perhaps another studio will have to do the legwork."
