If Slashdot's editorial duty is to emphasize news items based on their humanitarian importance, it fails with every article that isn't about death, poverty, slavery, etc. Of course, then it wouldn't be a tech website and we probably wouldn't visit it, so that all is fairly moot. This is about Dan Fredinburg because he was relevant to tech and known in our community (and he's certainly worth remembering as a person as well, regardless of what else is in the news). It's not here because it was the most important thing to happen in the past week.

I think it's on us to give the events in Nepal their due emphasis. Personally, I have donated to Doctors Without Borders, which is sending medical aid. I invite anyone else to do the same, and maybe to bring up the topic with family, friends, and coworkers.

But I am very glad and thank you for remembering the other Nepali. Maybe if we let the editors know that we would like them to setup a donation button or organize something in that vein so we can help out as a community, they would oblige.

Yeah it really is stupid. Is he saying "If you let me run malicious code on your computer, then I can run malicious code on your computer"? That's what it sounds like to me.

As far as I've ever heard, it is theoretically impossible to stop that kind of attack. If a user runs your code, then yeah, duh, your code can do whatever. I don't think that counts as a security vulterability.

Me too. I don't experience very many browser crashes. I use both FF and Chrome on Mac and Ubuntu. GP might want to review his extensions and see if one of them is causing the problem.

I want to chime in for uBlock. I used ABP for a long time then switched to uBlock a few months ago. It filters equally well and seems to live up to its promise of being faster/smaller. Recommended.

I haven't had a consistent doctor but I've been reminded by almost every doctor to get re-ups on my vaccines. Like changing oil on a car, if it's a 20-year vaccine then it's not too hard to guess when people need them. If a 25-year-old walks into the office, it's probably time. If a 45-year-old walks in, it's probably time again. This is how it's seemed to work for me.

How much does a doctor earn for giving a flu shot? The cost is $20 cash (at the local drug store) so their profit must be less than $20, probably less than $5. I've never understood that criticism (which you didn't make, but I've heard a lot). Vaccination is the opposite of the profit motive; doctors would make WAY more treating sick people than giving vaccines.

I've never understood this and I've never had anyone be able to explain it to me. What the heck could the difference between "personal beliefs" (or "philosophical") and "religion" possibly be? To me that means exactly the same thing. What would stop people from saying "Okay, fine, my religion is to not vaccinate my kids"?

Yeah but practically all of the anti-vax people are fully vaccinated, because they had parents who weren't asshats. Darwinism wouldn't weed out the right individuals, although it would weed out their genetic lineages.
