There is a study that in WW2, the Japanese were handicapped by their language in giving commands during battle so their plans basically kept going without timely changes in tactics. Imagine not being able to control your troops properly during the heat of combat, a recipe for disaster.

Bethesda Criticized Over Buggy Releases 397

SSDNINJA writes "This editorial discusses the habit of Bethesda Softworks to release broken and buggy games with plans to just fix the problems later. Following a trend of similar issues coming up in their games, the author begs gamers to stop supporting buggy games and to spread the idea that games should be finished and quality controlled before release – not weeks after."

Geez folks, Google is your friend. Check out "Digital Preservation, Planets" to find out that all the major libraries ARE digitizing everything they possibly can. They are also qualifying and choosing digital formats that CAN stand the test of time. If the formats change, the Planets committees will adapt and redo the work. This is not just "they should" but "they are." There is nothing special about paper, it's just was was available at the time. Digital is the next logical progressive step in passing knowledge, reporting the news and reading entertainment. The only thing it has against it right now is that it really only about 20 year old technology. Give it another 100 years, and digital storage will be just as accepted as paper ever was. Paper's time has come and gone. "it's the message, not the media, that is important".

PC Gamers Too Good For Consoles Gamers? 324

thsoundman sends in a blog post from Rahul Sood, CTO of HP's gaming business, who claims there was once a project in development at Microsoft to let Xbox users compete against PC users playing the same game. According to Sood, the project was killed because the console players kept getting destroyed by their PC counterparts. He wrote, "Those of us who have been in the gaming business for over a decade know the real deal. You simply don't get the same level of detail or control as you do with a PC over a console. It's a real shame that Microsoft killed this — because had they kept it alive it might have actually increased the desire of game developers and gamers alike to continue developing and playing rich experiences on the PC, which would trickle down to the console as it has in the past."

Droid X Gets Rooted 97

An anonymous reader writes "The Droid X forums have posted a procedure to root the new Motorola Droid X, putting to rest Andoid fans' fears that they would never gain access to the device's secrets due to a reported eFuse that would brick the phone if certain boot files were tampered with. Rooting the phone is the first step in gaining complete control over the device."

FreeNAS Switching From FreeBSD To Debian Linux 206

dnaumov writes "FreeNAS, a popular, free NAS solution, is moving away from using FreeBSD as its underlying core OS and switching to Debian Linux. Version 0.8 of FreeNAS as well as all further releases are going to be based on Linux, while the FreeBSD-based 0.7 branch of FreeNAS is going into maintenance-only mode, according to main developer Volker Theile. A discussion about the switch, including comments from the developers, can be found on the FreeNAS SourceForge discussion forum. Some users applaud the change, which promises improved hardware compatibility, while others voice concerns regarding the future of their existing setups and lack of ZFS support in Linux."

Heh, not so fast! Have you TRIED to BUY an ATI Radeon 5870 card since AMD/ATI "announced" it? Everyone is still showing zero stock (Amazon, Newegg, etc). Low yields on the GPU chip. If this goes on long enough, NVidia has a chance to catch up. Why in the world did ATI even bother to introduce the card if they cannot deliver? I smell desperation.

Scientists Say a Dirty Child Is a Healthy Child 331

Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California have shown that the more germs a child is exposed to, the better their immune system in later life. Their study found that keeping a child's skin too clean impaired the skin's ability to heal itself. From the article: "'These germs are actually good for us,' said Professor Richard Gallo, who led the research. Common bacterial species, known as staphylococci, which can cause inflammation when under the skin, are 'good bacteria' when on the surface, where they can reduce inflammation."

Agree. Look at Google's bare bones servers without even a UPS needed. Got to be a hell of a lot cheaper than this monstrosity. And of course this dual liquid piping will NEVER need maintenance or foul up or have a pump break, right? And there are no places for hard drives. 5 layers of boards and covers, two complete liquid cooling loops, single pump for a row of servers, what could possibly go wrong?

Agreed. This is the best response I have seen. Try to take the "I know best" out of the equation. Getting hot and bothered by something that I thought was of great importance but management did not almost got me fired more than once. The one time that I could not in all justice keep my mouth shut, my boss was fired and I was "laid off" a few weeks later. By keeping your cool and treating this as you would any other IT job, you get a fair chance of fixing it without anyone getting upset. Remember, you are supposed to be an ASSET to the company, not a pain in the ass. I once heard why a manager let a talented employee go. The manager said "the guy was great in doing the job but was it just too much trouble for me to manage him". Once more, with feeling "Communicate, communicate, communicate."
