Comment Re:It's not the paywall that's failed (Score 1) 428

We in the UK pay for the BBC willingly because it is worth the price

No it isn't. I'd rather not pay the fee at all. The only BBC show I've watched since paying my fee is Top Gear. That's once a week and it doesn't last the whole year. On top of that, the BBC pimps the show off to stations like Dave and Blighty. How is that worth my money. The only good thing about the fee is that some of it goes towards Channel 4 who do actually produce content I want and watch but even then, I watch most of that on 4oD anyway. The license fee is antiquated and should be abolished. Let's see how the BBC far when they have to balance their books.

TheReal_sabret00the writes: Nero AG, a company with one of the most fitting names ever (can you imagine a company called Hitler or Stalin 2000 years from now?), has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the MPEG-LA. The German technology company claims the licensing body has abused its monopoly power, and that is has not honoured agreements made with the US Department of Justice. There's some juicy stuff in here.

They transported quantum information over a free space distance of 16 km (10 miles), much further than the few hundred meters previously achieved, which brings us closer to transmitting information over long distances without the need for a traditional signal.
Google

Submission + - Balmer threatens Android and Linux with patents (dailytech.com)

7-Vodka writes: In an interview with Fortune, Balmer first admits that vista was badly done then when asked about Google giving away Android for free versus Microsoft, which charges smart phone carriers, Ballmer took issue with that assessment, stating, "And there's nothing free about Android. I mean at the end of the day as we certainly have asserted in a number of cases you know there's an intellectual property royalty due on that. Whether they happen to charge for their software or not is their business decision."
