Ditto on the recruiters calling. I recently submitted for a promotion to management at my former job. Since I had to updated my resume, I decided to post it on monster.com. I said I was looking for full time, non-contract work, but that sure didn't stop the recruiters from trying to contact me.

Submission + - Cox Internet is now Metered (cox.com) 1

leadfoot writes: Just got this email:

"Dear Cox High Speed Internet Customer,

We'd like to take this opportunity to announce the availability of the Data Usage Meter. This new feature provides an easy way to check monthly household high-speed Internet data usage at any time. Monthly data usage is the amount of data that users send, receive, download or upload each month for movies and videos, photos, web surfing, email, gaming, and other files.

Each of our packages has a specific data usage amount. The amount depends on your Cox High Speed Internet package and corresponds to the speeds provided with the package. Our speediest package provides the highest usage amount. You are currently subscribed to the Premier Package which has a monthly data usage amount of 250 Gigabytes (GB). This is equivalent to streaming about 138 standard definition movies, or 83 high definition movies in a month*.

The vast majority of our customers do not exceed their usage amount in a month and Cox does not charge you an additional fee if you exceed it. However, if you find that you are exceeding the usage amount for your package, you should check for the following potential causes:...... "

Submission + - Valve Anti-Cheat recent bug (valvesoftware.com)

leadfoot writes: I attempted to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this past Saturday and was rudely notified that my access was banned due to cheating. After researching, I determined that I would not be able to play this copy of the game ever again.

Today I received the following from Gabe himself:

Hello,

Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).

We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game.

To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can 'Manage Gifts and Guest Passes' from the 'Games' Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656.

To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn't already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately.

Regards,
Gabe Newell
President, Valve

Our options are:

Cox Cable
Dial-up

We are too far from the central office for any kind of DSL from qwest. Can the wireless carriers be considered ISP's at this point? I do occasionally use the Mobile Hotspot option on my Palm Pre Plus, but would never consider it as a primary home connection.
