Submission + - "Cheap" Apple iPhone in The Works (heaven4geeks.com)

kingkaos69 writes: Apple has stated multiple times before that it was not interested in low-cost smartphones, but we know sometimes the market realities may force one company to change its strategies and politics. Apparently this has been the case this time for Apple, as it is reportedly preparing to introduce at least one...

Submission + - Most Violent Video Games Of All Time

adeelarshad82 writes: Switzerland and Australia already feel that violent video games are an issue and in June U.S Supreme Court will also take matters in its own hands. A revisit to some of the most violent video games made over the last couple of decades shows exactly why this is such a huge concern. Moreover games like Mortal Kombat and Modern Warfare 2 are exactly why studies like violent video games aren't harmful to most kids taken seriously.

Submission + - Debian 6 Squeeze Review (desktoplinuxreviews.com)

JimLynch writes: It wasn’t too long ago that I did a very late review of Debian 5. I’m happy to say that it didn’t take me nearly as long to get around to the latest release, Debian 6 Squeeze. If you aren’t familiar with Debian then this release is a great chance to learn about a distro that is the foundation for a lot of other distributions including Ubuntu, Linux Mint and others.

Submission + - Gates & Ballmer dumping MSFT shares (theweek.com)

walterbyrd writes: Microsoft Founder and Chairman Bill Gates sold 10 million Microsoft shares earlier this month, for a total of 90 million shares sold over the past year (a value of approximately $2.5 billion). CEO Steve Ballmer also sold nearly 50 million shares in the past week, his first stock selloff in seven years. Gates is still Microsoft's largest shareholder, with nearly 600 million shares. But should other investors be nervous about the accelerated rate of his divestiture?

Images and sounds have to be played ASAP in a video game, when the real time event occurs. Draw images ASAP, play sounds ASAP, never try to synchronise (i.e. make drawing wait for sounds or make sounds wait for drawings) theim or your game will feel shitty. Images and sounds have to be synchronized only for movie playback, where lag doesn't matter.

No... I never said you had the freedom to force me to listen. I can walk away. If you insist on following me, I'll go to my private property (or someone else's private property that I know). If you still follow me after being asked to leave, you're trespassing.

Seems spam filters are basically putting up gates to my private property, in a very vague way.

And either way, I have every right to plug my ears and close my eyes while you try to sell me something. Freedom of speech doesn't imply you are guaranteed and audience :)

Submission + - Will Apple Rescue Intel's Silverthorne? (appleinsider.com)

UMEE writes: AppleInsider looks deep behind the rumors of an expanded partnership between Apple and Intel involving Silverthorne, the second generation, low power x86 processor designed to power Microsoft's UMPC. However, sales of the tablet devices have historically been bogged down by design, price, performance, and usability issues, and UMPCs have seen little marketing. Apple's use of the processor could turn things around by leveraging the company's strengths in marketing, retail, and design, but it's certainly not alone in targeting the ultra mobile space. Low priced alternatives including the Asus Eee PC and OLPC XO-1, both of which run Linux and use processors from Intel rivals TI and AMD, have already stolen the limelight among ultra mobile devices. Is the future ultra mobile? Will tablet computing fail yet again? Will Apple Rescue Intel's Silverthorne?

Submission + - Commercial Wimax deployed in Pakistan

tiemand2007 writes: Previously the planned rollout of a Wimax network in Pakistan was reported on slashdot. Now that it is a reality what are its effects? According to this blog post, the network has helped increase competition and decrease broadband prices significantly in the country. The network can provide 128kpbs-2mbps wireless connectivity.

Submission + - What Programming Languages Should You Know?

nitsudima writes: David Chisnall posits that the more programming languages you know, the better. The point is not to stuff your head with language rules. Rather, he explains how being able to read multiple languages, even if you never code in them, can help you to select the best possible tool for each coding need — and understand the limitations of the tools you're using.

Sony Further Details Home, Looks to October Launch 37

njkid1 writes "According to GameDaily, new details have been revealed about the Home service for the PlayStation 3. Not only will the advertising possibilities be 'limitless,' but the virtual community will also be able to serve as a bustling commerce hub. Transactions will eventually be able to take place within Home itself, and the company refers to the possibility of ticketing for virtual events like developer chats or game previews. At the same time, however, Sony said that advertising will be made 'palatable' so as not to drive away users. A Q&A at the official Sony site states that an October launch is planned (pdf) for the service." GameDaily also has an article looking at reactions from Microsoft and Nintendo on Sony's announcement.

PC Gaming's Future Evolution 51

Dr. Eggman writes "1up.com is reporting on the GDC panel from last week entitled PC Gaming in an Age of Connected Consoles. Unlike the usual doom and gloom about the 'death' of PC games, this panel suggested that the death is of PC games as we know them - PC gaming will evolve. They believe the future of gaming on the PC lies in strengths like persistent-world environments; not just as MMOs but anything that has elements of a persistent nature such as Battlefield 2142. They go on to describe the PC's greatest edge over consoles: user created content and the supportive game communities built around it. The article also cited the panel's views on the weaknesses inherent in consoles' closed networks and content control."

Submission + - Customers rights to non-crippled version?

An anonymous reader writes: Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3.1 cs1 and cs2 updates were possibly accidentally released without limiting the officially supported 16 I/O numbers to fully use the 32 I/Os of the new M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge interface.

Since then the updates were removed from the Pro Tools site.

Can users, who did not have a chance to get this release demand the accidentally released "full" version, instead of the official crippled one?

Submission + - Sony Details Home, Microsoft Responds

fistfullast33l writes: "Via PS3Fanboy/Joystiq, Sony has released a new PDF document detailing for developers what to expect with Home. The bombshell being dropped is that not only will it appear on the PS3, but it will be available for the PSP and Mobile Devices (iPhone anyone? Probably not). Other details include more fleshing out of how the advertising will work (advertising will fund HOME, not users), and that players will be able to "auction" off user-created content for money, but it's not detailed whether it's real money or play money used for something else. Also on PS3Fanboy, Microsoft has responded to HOME's announcement with pretty much the most obvious point they could make. "I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here," says Chris Satchell, director of Microsoft's Game Developer Group. In terms of LittleBigPlanet, Satchell says "I can't see a big portfolio of games at the moment that do this. I don't think there's a whole load to catch up.""
