Submission + - Apple's Dev Site Down for an Entire Week

An anonymous reader writes: Apple's iPhone development site has been down since just before Christmas and possibly longer. I got a MacBook Pro for XMas and was hoping to download the SDK to begin my life of living large, making millions of dollars a day on an app that says "Oooh yeah" in a random language. Can I sue them for lost revenue?

Mac OS X 10.6.2 Will Block Atom Processors 1012

Archeopteryx writes "According to Wired's 'Gadget Lab' blog, Snow Leopard's next update, OS X 10.6.2, will block the Atom processor and will disable many 'Hackintosh' netbooks. It is indeed true that OS X will run just fine on some netbooks if you install the right drivers and ktexts, but Apple's EULA has always specified that the license was applicable only to Apple hardware. There have always been processor types specified in OS X and that have to be worked around now for those who want to use an Atom or similar non-Apple-adopted processor, so this is likely no more than a hiccup on the road for the OSX86 crowd. But, it raises the question: is it time for Apple to sell a license for non-Apple hardware — priced accordingly of course — for those people who want OS X on platform types Apple has not yet adopted, like the netbook? The only reason OS X is not on my Eee is that I want to comply with the licensing terms. I could just pay for a license to use it."

Submission + - Apple backs off DMCA threats against wiki

netbuzz writes: "A wiki operator who was pressured by Apple's legal team into removing anonymous discussions about circumventing the company's music-playback software for iPods and iPhones says he is relieved that Apple has backed off and he'll be able to restore the disputed material. Apple dropped its claims of copyright and DMCA violation against BluWiki only under legal pressure of its own in the form of a lawsuit by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Submission + - 800 TFLOP real-time ray tracing GPU unveiled (arstechnica.com)

wjousts writes: Ars Technica are reporting on a new real-time ray-tracing (RTRT) system that gangs together nine, 73-core chips into a single system that fits inside a desktop computer form factor.

"The new chip, which is being jointly developed with Toyota and Unisys, is aimed at the auto industry, where designers will use it to prototype body designs and paint combinations. "

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that it will ever make it in to your gaming rig.

Submission + - Lenovo Software Update Stealthily Installs Adware

An anonymous reader writes: A recent Lenovo automatic software update has the great feature of displaying annoying pop-up ads for Lenovo products. Whats worse, it appears that many users are unable to turn the advertisement "feature" off, subjecting them to pop-ups every couple of hours. Gee guys, a note about your 20% off sale in my e-mail wouldn't have bothered me that much, but you really had to pop up over top of my powerpoint slides? I'm sure that all of my office colleagues will be running to order ThinkPads...
