Flip side is they do this to fresh graduate students all the time. Hire them and they get started on OPT and then when they start in June Oh sorry we missed the deadline for H1B and we will try to do something about it. The guy works like crazy for a year but at the end of the year he just goes back to his country as he is out of status as his OPT training period is over.

US Embassy Categorizes Beijing Air Quality As 'Crazy Bad' Screenshot-sm 270

digitaldc writes "Pollution in Beijing was so bad Friday the US embassy, which has been independently monitoring air quality, ran out of conventional adjectives to describe it, at one point saying it was 'crazy bad.' The embassy later deleted the phrase, saying it was an 'incorrect' description and it would revise the language to use when the air quality index goes above 500, its highest point and a level considered hazardous for all people by US standards. The hazardous haze has forced schools to stop outdoor exercises, and health experts asked residents, especially those with respiratory problems, the elderly and children, to stay indoors."

NASA Parodies Reach New Level of Awkwardness Screenshot-sm 28

MMBK writes "NASA TV recently produced six movie-trailer parodies about current projects for a 'themed exhibit at an international conference.' But for the most part, the attempt remains pretty corny, far, far away from the imaginative, inspiring work of space artists like Bruce McCall."

Its not just filling prisons. A lot of corporations use prison labor for manufacturing toys, license plates etc. Even some call centers are run from prisons. What makes this profitable is that prisoners dont have to be paid minimum wage so they are even competitive with Chinese labor costs. Next time someone tells you why not buy American when American goods are only a little more expensive than the Chinese goods be aware that the goods were probably manufactured by prisoners pushed into prison on such flimsy charges. So if you really like freedom buy Chinese.

PARC Builds iPod-Sized HIV Detector 93

MikeChino writes "Right now it's difficult, if not impossible, to quickly detect HIV in patients living in impoverished countries. That may all change soon, though — researchers at a California outfit called the Palo Alto Research Center have built an iPod-sized handheld device that can provide an immune check-up in under 10 minutes — all with a prick of the finger. With millions of people around the world without access to a full-size laboratory, PARC's device could revolutionize the detection and treatment of HIV."

Officials Sue Couple Who Removed Their Lawn 819

Hugh Pickens writes "The LA Times reports that Orange County officials are locked in a legal battle with a couple accused of violating city ordinances for replacing the grass on their lawn with wood chips and drought-tolerant plants, reducing their water usage from 299,221 gallons in 2007 to 58,348 gallons in 2009. The dispute began two years ago, when Quan and Angelina Ha tore out the grass in their front yard. In drought-plagued Southern California, the couple said, the lush grass had been soaking up tens of thousands of gallons of water — and hundreds of dollars — each year. 'We've got a newborn, so we want to start worrying about her future,' said Quan Ha, an information technology manager for Kelley Blue Book. But city officials told the Has they were violating several city laws that require that 40% of residential yards to be landscaped predominantly with live plants. Last summer, the couple tried to appease the city by building a fence around the yard and planting drought-tolerant greenery — lavender, rosemary, horsetail, and pittosporum, among others. But according to the city, their landscaping still did not comply with city standards. At the end of January, the Has received a letter saying they had been charged with a misdemeanor violation and must appear in court. The couple could face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for their grass-free, eco-friendly landscaping scheme. 'It's just funny that we pay our taxes to the city and the city is now prosecuting us with our own money,' says Quan Ha."

Prolonged Gaming Blamed For Rickets Rise Screenshot-sm 254

superapecommando writes "Too many hours spent playing videogames indoors is contributing to a rise in rickets, according to a new study by doctors. Professor Simon Pearce and Dr Tim Cheetham of Newcastle University have written a paper in the British Medical Journal which warns of the rickets uptake – a disease which sufferers get when deficient in Vitamin D. The study boils down to the fact that as more people play videogames indoors they don't get enough sunlight and this has meant the hospitals are now having to combat a disease that was last in the papers around the time Queen Victoria was on the throne." At least the kids are eating enough snacks with iodized salt that we don't have to worry about goiters.

After all politicians in the US dont care about the little people making up the army. So the machines will be parked in their sheds to conserve oil and fighting will be on foot on both sides. And elephants are a damn lot intimidating than cavalry. Of course both can be scared off by loud noises so it comes down to hand to hand fighting and believe me anyone who has riden a public bus in India is much better at hand to hand fighting than any pussy SEAL or DELTA

NoNoNo The purpose of Kyoto and all other environmental treaties is to get a good image before the world wakes up to the fact of who has done most of the pollution and decides to impose a Morgenthau Plan on the US. For those who dont know about Morgenthau he was the US Secretary of treasury during WW2 who proposed Germany be punished for the holocaust by being changed into a agriculture only nation by dismantling and destroying all German industry. Fortunately the Truman administration realized if they did that given Germany's high population density millions would starve to death (Germany cant grow enough food to feed its people and needs to export industrial goods to import food)However America does grow enough food to feed its people and has already polluted more than all other nations combined. The nations of the world may get fed up and decide to impose a Morgenthau Plan on America. As long as America keeps paying lip service to the Environment the other nations keep quite.
