Journal Journal: Is Sensenbrenner's PATRIOT Act Power Play Tom DeLay's Obit? 1

I'm too busy to research a timeline right now, but my understanding was that for DeLay to have a shot at returning to his leadership post next year, the House needed to remain out of session until his case came to trial at the very end of January. If the PATRIOT Act must now be addressed in January, I take it that the House must come back into session sometime in mid- to late January, sometime before DeLay is set to go to trial.

Journal Journal: BREAKING: Bush Is Off the Wagon - and On the Horse? 7

The AP has a little personal interest story about Bush's Asian trip. It notes that Bush "drank fermented mare's milk -- sometimes likened to a mix of warm beer and buttermilk" what it doesn't seem to put together from that statement is that this is the first reputable report of Bush drinking alcohol since he says he became a teatotaller after finding J

Journal Journal: Has Harriet Miers been cheating on her taxes?

I was pointed to the issue by a comment on Think Progress blog entry. The commenter noted that it looks like Miers has been claiming her Dallas home as her "residence" and thus claiming what ends up to be a reduction of over $3,000 for her Real Estate tax. Since she has been working (well over) fulltime in DC since at least January 20th, 2001, it seems a pretty long commute to have her residence in Dallas still after all thi

Journal Journal: Man I wish this was joke - IN to outlaw IVF for Single Women 7

this has been bouncing around the blogosphere today and after tracking it back to DailyKos I found a link to the actual legislation [214Kb PDF] - which seems to not yet have been laughed out of committee. Aparently there is an epidemic of unmarried women seeking to get pregnant in Indiana and GOP instends to ensure that if any babies are going to ma

That's 76 x 1600x1200 x 24 bits/second of graphics...3.5Gbits/sec. Realtime compression tricks might cut that in half - but even a dedicated 1GHz link to eachuser is insufficient.

Network bandwidth will continue to increase in speed and decrease in cost. In 10 years its feasible every home might have a dedicated 1GBps link. In the meantime, the actual bandwidth required won't really increase - once network bandwidth reaches the bandwidth of the human nervous system, its only logical that computation will become centralized.

Journal Journal: Welcome to my journal

I haven't posted anything for a while, not because I don't have anything interesting to share, but because I don't have anybody to share it with. I mean, why post it on Slashdot where only a small number of users will read it. Maybe nobody will read it. Most likely you got here by reading a comment I made on a story. I don't make comments very often, so it is unlikely many people will find me.

Journal Journal: Lost Cell Phone - Is it the Newest Meme? 4

It seems like there is a rash of lost phones in zoo.pl well my wife actually lost hers a week ago. We were hoping that some good samaritan would find the phone, look up HOME in the directory and dial it. Well, someone did find it but we have once again been forced to accept that humanity is a lost cause when it comes to shiny trinkets (we had a phone stolen from our car a c

Journal Journal: Bolton Lackey Rigged Elections for Marcos in the Phillipines 4

The story or Matthew Freedman may finally be the shovel of dirt that buries the Bolton nomination. While others have noted the general sleaziness of having a lobbyist who admits he's not the most qualified candidate for the job working as a part-time $100k/year consultant for a federal agency, I'm most intrigued by one specific part of Freedman's resume:
