Comment Open Wifi means there's no one to blame (Score 1) 505

in the 1st place. Sharing connections so they become nodes in a wireless connection, gives oneself plausible deniability in regards what one downloads. Well anyway, to the same extent one has by running a web cafe from one's own connection.

You know Wifi was originally designed so everyone was covered by overlapping free/open Wifi, giving everyone covered "multithreaded" internet connections & thus maximum bandwidth via all this parallelism between one's wifi modem & the internet. Of course it's an honour system in regards users adding to this Wifi web / contributing to it by having their own connection at home open to others & thus becoming another node.

Comment fresh is cheaper than fast (Score 1) 391

I doubt any calculations can end in a result that indicates that junk food is cheaper than fresh fruit 'n vegies, plus the required quantity of natural balanced protein sources, prepared at home in healthy portions.

The problem is that maybe the people you are referring to lack motivation, were badly brought up, born into families of multi-generational violence/substance abuse/ignorance/welfare/etc, have mental health issues, etc,etc & thus are domestically dysfunctional.

Comment govt vs head of state (Score 1) 301

You're getting the type of govt mixed up with the type of head of state.

Regardless of it's meaning in the past, today "Republic" is just a term for nations that don't have a monarch as head of state, while "democracy" is a reference to a type of govt, they are not mutually exclusive. Afterall have you ever heard of anyone describing the UK, Canada & Australia as republics?

Comment Problem is there's over enforcement in the US (Score 1) 382

In the US it seems many prosecutors will prosecute to the maximum, even if they think there's a large possibility the defendant is innocent or acted with little or no malicious intent.

There's there's the way they use the threat of mandatory minimums to get the defendant to plead out on the condition of snitch testimony on whatever amount of people are required, all just to run a snitch snowball to get bonuses based on forfeiture values. Look at Tulia, Texas (or was it Union, Alabama) where it seemed that that just about every black family that owned property was dragged up by the snitch snowball & got forfeitured to buggery - with no evidence what so ever except snitch testimonies forced out of people via the threat of mandatory life sentences (Coke was found in only 2 of the hundreds of families the LEOs ransacked. Even then that tiny amount of coke found matched Coke used by a paid freelance undercover cop in a previous operation)). In Western Europe the vast majority of them would not even have been facing doing any time at all, hypothetically.

You know that even with China having at least 3 to 4 times the population of the US, the US both incarcerates v& executes more people than China does, thats by the total number, NOT per capita. BTW per capita the only place with a higher incarceration rate than the US is the West Bank or Gaza (I can't remember which Palestinian Territory was mentioned when I read that).
