Submission + - AFP: Wikipedia co-founder slams Wikileaks (google.com)

Suki I writes: KUALA LUMPUR — The co-founder of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, on Tuesday slammed whistleblower WikiLeaks over its release of Afghan war documents which he said could "get people killed".
Wales also expressed irritation over the website's use of the term "Wiki" in its name, which refers to a site that allows different users to collaborate and make contributions.
"I would distance myself from WikiLeaks, I wish they wouldn't use the name, they are not a Wiki. A big way they got famous in the first place was by using the word Wiki, which was unfortunate in my view," he said at a business conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Submission + - Felony charges dropped in fire-breathing bartender (fairfaxtimes.com)

Suki I writes: via Fairfax Times:

Today Morrogh said the felony charges in the case were inappropriate and will be dismissed.

"I reviewed the case and decided the felony charges were not appropriate," he said. "I didn't find any evidence of malice and the explosive device was a bottle with a wick in it that was lit. I filed a motion to have the felony charges dismissed."

A formal hearing to dismiss the felony charges will be held in Fairfax County District Court in Herndon on Thursday. The statewide fire prevention code misdemeanors against the bartenders still stand and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept 22. Those charges could result in three years imprisonment and a combined fine of $7,500 for each of them.

"We were very confident this case would be resolved appropriately by the Commonwealth's Attorney and we are looking forward to the proper resolution in this case," said attorney Mani Fierro of the Herndon Law firm, which represents Rogers and Fedorchak, along with attorney Kyle Manikas.

Submission + - WikiLeaks rape case: Bad news for women (salon.com)

Suki I writes: The sloppy handling of high-profile charges against Julian Assange is a disservice to sexual assault victims:

Assange has implied on Twitter that the allegations were payback for his part in WikiLeaks' publishing several tens of thousands of classified Afghan war documents: "We were warned to expect dirty tricks. Now we have the first one." His conspiracy theorizing was echoed by the likes of Gavin MacFadyen, director of the Center for Investigative Journalism, who told the New York Daily News, "A lot of us who had any notion of what he was doing expected this sort of thing to happen at least a week ago," said "I'm amazed it has taken this long to get it together." Meanwhile, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet interviewed the woman who leveled the molestation claim: "The accusations against Assange are of course not orchestrated by the Pentagon or anybody else. Responsibility for what happened to myself and the other girl lies with a man who has a skewed attitude to women and a problem taking no for an answer."

Submission + - Vivian Leigh (Scarlett O'Harah) was Bisexual? (blogspot.com)

Suki I writes: Grain of salt and all that, someone is promoting a book that alleges Vivian Leigh (Scarlett O'Harah) was Sex Crazed Bisexual Nymphomaniac.

"As reported by Roe Caan on 890 WLS-AM, Chicago, who was apparently reading from this report:
Anne Lu — AHN Entertainment Contributor

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) — Hollywood icon Vivien Leigh was a real scarlet woman. The two-time Academy Award-winning actress, best known for playing Scarlett O'Hara in the classic "Gone with the Wind," enjoyed sex from other stars and prostitutes of both sexes, according to a new biography.

"Damn You, Scarlett O'Hara" – by co-authors Darwin Porter, who claims to have known the British actress in the '60s, and Roy Moseley, her husband Laurence Olivier's personal assistant – allege that Leigh enjoyed sex with the "rough trade," or from male prostitutes picked up at Scotty's, an L.A. brothel disguised as a gas station with a pump and 22 attendants."

Submission + - Solar System older than previously thought : Natur (nature.com)

Suki I writes: A meteorite found in the Sahara Desert has helped to pin down the age of the Solar System and shed light on how it may have formed.

The new estimate, which comes from measuring the ratios of lead isotopes inside the chondrite — an ancient stony meteorite — suggests that the Solar System is 4.568 billion years old. This is 0.3–1.9 million years older than some previous studies projected. The relatively small revision means that models of the gas and dust that gave rise to the Solar System should have around double the amount of a certain iron isotope, iron-60, than previously suggested.

Submission + - WikiLeaks founder charged with rape, molestation i (cnn.com)

Suki I writes: CNN confirms with Swedish authorities: The founder and editor of the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been charged in Sweden with rape and molestation, a spokeswoman for the Swedish prosecutor's office told CNN Saturday.

From the WikiLeaks Twitter page Julian Assange: the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing.

Submission + - The Associated Press: Report: rape investigation o (google.com) 1

Suki I writes: STOCKHOLM — A Swedish tabloid says an arrest warrant has been issued for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on suspicion of rape, and officials have issued a statement "confirming media reports." The prosecutor's office in Stockholm "confirms media reports that a foreign citizen has been arrested in absentia" but doesn't name Assange. It says the arrest involves one count of molestation and one count of rape. The WikiLeaks Twitter page referred to Saturday's article in Expressen, which cites prosecutor Maria Haljebo Kjellstrand, as "dirty tricks." It says: "Expressen is a tabloid; No one here has been contacted by Swedish police. Needless to say this will prove hugely distracting." Assange was in Sweden last week.

Submission + - Ann Coulter dropped from conference over speech to (blogspot.com)

Suki I writes: FWIW, WND really is being silly about this: "The conservative website World Net Daily.com (WND) announced Wednesday that it was canceling a planned keynote address by Ann Coulter next month at its "Taking America Back Annual Conference" because of her decision to give a paid speech before a gay conservative group."

At least it isn't the government preventing someone from speaking.

Suki I writes: An employee of Apple Inc. (AAPL) was arrested Friday for allegedly receiving more than $1 million in kickbacks from six companies in Asia that serve as suppliers to the Silicon Valley company.

Paul Shin Devine, a global supply manager at Apple, was charged in a federal grand jury indictment of offenses that include wire fraud, money laundering and unlawful monetary transactions. The indictment also names Andrew Ang, an employee of one of Apple's suppliers.

Submission + - Ella, Morning After Pill Approved By FDA (blogspot.com)

Suki I writes: A new morning after pill, also known as an emergency contraception pill, called Ella (ulipristal acetate) has been approved in tablet form by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has been approved as a prescription-only-product, and prevents pregnancy if taken within five days after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure.

The FDA stresses that Ella is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive.

Submission + - The PC World take on the Oracle vs. Google War (blogspot.com)

Suki I writes: via PC World: Last week, when Oracle announced it was suing Google for alleged infringement of Oracle's Java patents, my initial reaction was one of resigned realization: when Oracle bought Sun Microsystems last year, I always wondered if it was just to get control of MySQL, arguably Oracle's once-biggest potential threat. They weren't doing anything with OpenSolaris, after all, and just this week at LinuxCon, praised Linux to the heavens.

Suki I writes: How far would you go to tell people to read Ayn Rand? For Nick Newcomen, the answer is measurable down to the mile: Newcomen drove 12,238 miles across 30 U.S. states to pen a message using GPS tracking that can only be read using Google Earth. The message? “Read Ayn Rand.”

Submission + - San Francisco: A Free Market in Parking Begins (blogspot.com)

Suki I writes: American parodies of San Francisco as leftist and socialist may soon need some revision. San Francisco will soon have the most libertarian, free-market parking policy in the nation. And it should become easier to find parking.

Conventional American policy says that parking should be made available at subsidized discounts, or even for free. The fact is, 12 square meters of real estate in a dense city has a land value, and that means it has a fair rental value. What's the value? Easy. Ask the market.

Suki I writes: Maybe he can be the first customer at the proposed Ground Zero gay bar, right next to the proposed Mosque? — Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division, Robbery Section and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating an armed bank robbery that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring.

Police said the robber was wearing a long black burqa, blue jeans, and tan boots. He entered the bank, displayed a gun, and demanded cash.
