Comment Re:They sued whom? (Score 1) 2

they sued geocoder.ca and its founder Ervin Ruci (who created the site while a graduate student in computer science at carleton university in 2004). the data from geocoder.ca is used on many large sites, for eg go to www.openstreetmap.org and look up a postal code, say K2C1N5 . they are not going after the big sites though, at least not just yet.

Submission + - crowdsourced postal code dataset sued in federal court by Canada Post. (geocoder.ca) 2

eruci writes: ""you can not crowdsource a dataset similar to mine" says Canada Post. You have no right! I have copyright!
So, geocoder.ca has been sued for "copyright infringement" and "damages" by Canada Post Corp.
At a time when the trend seems to favor opening up datasets to encourage innovation, in Canada there is a crown corporation which is seeking to remove from public access a free dataset which has been generated using crowdsourcing over the last 8 years. They are spending top dollar to hire Canada's top law firm in copyright litigation to bring down a website which does not have adequate financial resources to defend itself. Does the slashdot community have any advice in a case like this?"
