Submission + - Valve's Steam Machines delayed, won't be coming in 2014 (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: Valve has announced that its Steam Machines won’t be available in the market anytime in 2014. The company delayed the release due to ongoing work on the Steam Controller. Valve’s Eric Hope explains on Steam Forums why the work on controller is causing the delay: “We’re now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers. It’s generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we’ll be able to make the controller a lot better. Of course, it’s also keeping us pretty busy making all those improvements. Realistically, we’re now looking at a release window of 2015, not 2014,"

Submission + - LXDE, Razor-Qt merge to create LXQt project (muktware.com)

sfcrazy writes: ‘May the fork be with you’ is a term we often hear in the free software community as it’s extremely easy to take the code and fork it to scratch your etch. What’s really difficult (and that’s something really counts) is to actually come together, collaborate and merge code-base to create something which helps more people, which is not just about scratching your own itch, but to do something which benefits more and more people. LXDE and Razor-Qt communities have merged their efforts to create what they aptly call LXQt. The communities have announced LXQt 0.7.0, the first release of LXQt, the Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment.

Submission + - NSA has been exploiting Heartbleed for two years (muktware.com) 2

sfcrazy writes: As people were wondering NSA’s role in Heartbleed, it turned out that the agency was aware of the bug for the last two years and has been exploiting it to spy on people. If the reports are true and NSA was aware of the bug and instead of getting it fixed it let extremely critical info of US citizens exposed to cyber criminals then NSA does need more oversight from the government. NSA is not going to get a very ‘heartwarming’ response from the world for this. We need to start asking our lawmakers (who are more concerned whether they are good sell for Koch Brothers are not) when did ‘putting American’s security at risk became an act of ‘protecting nation’s security’?

Submission + - Ubuntu to drop Amazon search from home scope (muktware.com)

sfcrazy writes: Google new for Ubuntu fans and critics. With Unity 8 there won't be any 'search everything' home scope, if one wants to see Amazon results then they will have to use Amazon scope. In a nutshell, the controversial 'search everything' home scope is gone which was sending data to Canonical servers and instead it will become the 'Application scope' which will show applications. It will show installed apps as well as apps available for download — makes perfect sense.

There will, however, be a 'search everything' scope called 'scopes' where if you search it will work more or less like the previous (current) home scope and will show results from different sources using the 'Smart Scopes' service being developed by Canonical.

I think this move, after systemd, shows Canonical has started to make right descisions.

The fourth repo "KDE:Unstable:SC" will offer early builds as they are being devloped.
