Submission + - Fedora to get a new partition manager (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: Developer Vratislav Podzimek announced the next-gen partition manager for Fedora, blivet-gui. It is eventually going to replace GParted, the most popular GUI based partition manager found in all major distros. The new tool is named blivet-gui as it is based on the blivet python library (originally Anaconda’s storage management and configuration tool). The need of a new partition manager is roots from the fact that none of the existing GUI partitioning tools supports all the modern storage technologies. Fedora’s Anaconda base supports all and is hence chosen as the back-end for this new intuitive tool. The application is only a few months old but is already looking nice and useful. Features like RAID and BTRFS support are being worked on. Vojtech Trefny is the other developer working with Vratislav on blivet-gui.

Submission + - Linus Torvalds on insults: Respect should be earned (themukt.com) 1

sfcrazy writes: During DebConf 2014 an attendee asked Linus about his ‘insults’ mentioning one of the episodes involving Kay Sievers of systemd where Linus said, “Who the f*ck does idiotic things like that? How did they noty die as babies, considering that they were likely too stupid to find a tit to suck on?” Unlike commercial companies where a boss can fire an employee for messing things up, Linus doesn’t have that luxury. It’s an open source project; he can’t fire people. One of the ways Linus can express his frustration when some top developer breaks something is through harsh words on mailing lists, which he says is kind of hyperbole and joke. Linus also said that he is abrasive and he likes arguements.

The attendee then said he was not talking about Linus being abrasive but about respecting orthers.

There was a loud applause. Linus said, “I don’t respect people unless I think they deserve the respect. There are people who think that respect is something that should be given, and I happen to be one of the people who is perfectly happy saying no respect should be earned. And without being earned, you don’t get it. It’s really that simple.”

Submission + - Koch Brothers' backed group says US constitution is a Marxists agenda (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: Koch Brothers' backed American Commitment Group is sending out emails to people saying that the US constitution is a Communist and Marxist agenda and it was the first step in the fight to destroy American Capitalism altogether. In an email received by one of our journalists, American Commitment president Phil Kerpen suggests that protecting people's rights was the "first step in the fight to destroy American capitalism altogether" and says that the federal government has been plotting a "federal Internet takeover," since the birth of this country by the so-called Bill of Rights and Amendments. These moves "sound more like a story coming out of China or Russia."

sfcrazy writes: His school ran a project asking children to write a letter to their heroes, while most kids wrote to celebrities Zach wrote to the ‘real’ hero Linus Torvalds. Submission + - How the US army is embracing solar and wind energy (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: In the age when we have super-computers like power in our mobile phones, reliance on extremely limited natural resources like gas or coal for energy make us look ‘pre-historic’; it’s more like still using Floppy Drives as our primary source of storage! We should move towards those forms of energies which will never deplete or go away such as wind, water and sun.

The US army is doing something similar. They are using a program to cut cost and reliance on ‘will-be-gone-one-day’ energy sources. The Army, under Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) Program, has nearly completed the installation of two wind turbines at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico which will produce an estimated 5 percent of the energy consumed by the installation.

Submission + - Carnegie Mellon creates open source tool to 'extract' 3D obecjts from 2D images (themukt.com)

Submission + - The Expendables 3 – what if Quentin Tarantino directed it? (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: Now imagine if Sam Peckinpah (long dead bless him, but not forgotten) directed an Expendables movie – take that thought to bed with you tonight and count the slo-mo deaths as you fall asleep. Unless our reality shifts into an alternate universe, that’s not going to happen. So let’s get Peckinpah’s apprentice to direct the next Expendables – Quentin Tarantino.

Submission + - Linux Kernel Shuffling Zombie Juror aka 3.16 released (themukt.com)

sfcrazy writes: Linus Torvalds has announced the release of Linux kernel 3.16 codenamed ‘Shuffling Zombie Juror’, which brings many notable improvements. There was nothing much dramatic about this release as Linus said, “So while 3.16 looked a bit iffy for a while, things cleared up nicely, and there was no reason to do extra release candidates like I feared just a couple of weeks ago.”

It also means that working on 3.17 has started, “And as usual (previous release being the exception) that means that the merge window for 3.17 is obviously open,” said Linus.
