GCC Compiler Finally Supplanted by PCC? 546

Sunnz writes "The leaner, lighter, faster, and most importantly, BSD Licensed, Compiler PCC has been imported into OpenBSD's CVS and NetBSD's pkgsrc. The compiler is based on the original Portable C Compiler by S. C. Johnson, written in the late 70's. Even though much of the compiler has been rewritten, some of the basics still remain. It is currently not bug-free, but it compiles on x86 platform, and work is being done on it to take on GCC's job."

Submission + - Study: 2 Out of 5 Bosses Are Liars

Freshly Exhumed writes: The abusive boss has been well documented in movies ("Nine to Five"), television (Fox's "My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss") and the Web. A new Florida State University study shows that nearly two of five bosses don't keep their word and more than a fourth bad mouth those they supervise to co-workers, leading to poor morale, less production and higher turnover. 'They say that employees don't leave their job or company, they leave their boss. We wanted to see if this is, in fact, true,' said Wayne Hochwarter, an associate professor of management in FSU's College of Business.

Submission + - Find Friends Using Vanity.. Powered By Google

Lynn Wallenstein writes: "I just finished my public beta of Long Time Lost, my first software app. Long Time Lost is a free "service" (more so it is a software app written by someone who had some spare time, good programmer friends, a little bit of creativity and a lot of coffee) that allows you to create a "search" for someone you lost touch with. That "search" is then indexed by Google (and other search engines) and then when that person you are looking for (or someone who knows them) does a "Vanity Search" (the process of searching for one's own name on Google... we know you do it!) they find your "search" and can respond to you and reconnect. All information is handled through the system so your private information like your email address isn't out there on the net. It's new, it's Web 2.0, it's powered by Google, it's Ruby on Rails... and it's FREE :) http://www.longtimelost.com/"

Journal Journal: Cheapskate tricks #1

Many times, I find myself on the run between work and gigs. Traffic around Boston can be insane, so inevitably I have to choke down some fast food. Not for price, but for speed.

If you do the obvious thing, it will cost you about $7 for one of those so-valued "value" meals. Surely, we can do better. If you're going to suffer the insult of eating crappy food, why overpay for it? You can get a dinner for about $2. Here's how:

Nanocosmetics Used Since Ancient Egypt 252

Roland Piquepaille writes "French researchers have found that Egyptians, Greek and Romans were using nanotechnology to dye their hair several thousands years ago. Nanowerk Spotlight reports they were using lead compounds which generated lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals with a diameter of only 5 nanometers. At a moment where many people wonder if the use of nanoparticles is safe, it's good to know that nanotechnology has been widely used for a very long time."

Networked Landmines Work Together 768

crazedpilot writes "New landmines will soon communicate via a radio network, and move from place to place in order to be most effective." Termed the "self-healing minefield", the individual mines are capable of detecting an enemy breach and then moving to seal the gap.

Teenage Blogger Finds Gmail Hole 268

cpm80 wrote to mention the news that a 14 year old blogger has identified a security hole in the Gmail webmail service. From the Network World article: "He wrote that he was trying to e-mail JavaScript code from a Yahoo account to a G-mail account. The code will run in a preview pane, he wrote. But if the code is mailed from one Gmail account to another, it is filtered out, he said. Some visitors to the blog reported being able to replicate the findings, but others said later that they were not able to and that the supposed flaw had been fixed."

That's Cowdog, not Coward.

Grousing about rejected stories is off topic everywhere but here, right?

I have a theory that the /. editors reject my stories because they see "Anonymous Cow..." and, without reading those crucial last three letters, their eye skips past my story onto the next obviously non-anonymous one.
