Prolonged Gaming Blamed For Rickets Rise 254

superapecommando writes "Too many hours spent playing videogames indoors is contributing to a rise in rickets, according to a new study by doctors. Professor Simon Pearce and Dr Tim Cheetham of Newcastle University have written a paper in the British Medical Journal which warns of the rickets uptake – a disease which sufferers get when deficient in Vitamin D. The study boils down to the fact that as more people play videogames indoors they don't get enough sunlight and this has meant the hospitals are now having to combat a disease that was last in the papers around the time Queen Victoria was on the throne." At least the kids are eating enough snacks with iodized salt that we don't have to worry about goiters.

Visualizing the Ideological History of SCOTUS 151

langelgjm writes "An interesting exercise in quantifying and visualizing ideological shifts, the website ScotusScores.com tracks changes in the ideological history of the US Supreme Court from 1937 to 2007. Ideological positions are quantified using Martin-Quinn scores, and the chart highlights the often-bumpy transitions (Thurgood Marshall to Clarence Thomas), as well as tendencies within each Justice's career."

Here's a high quality image of your face from your Facebook page. I mean, I'd have to join the Sacramento network, but its pretty easy if I wanted to.

I imagine macraig.homedns.org and vulcan tourist.info had pics too but you can't seem to keep them up. I like the cartoon image of you that you usually use though.

Submission + - Facebook Reverts Back To Old Terms Of Service (consumerist.com)

suraj.sun writes: Consumerist : Facebook Reverts Back To Old Terms Of Service

It appears in the wake of global attention and outcry ( http://consumerist.com/5155538/facebook-privacy-fallout-goes-nuclear ), Facebook has, as of at least 12:27 am, reverted back to the previous Terms of Service. Phew, now we can all go back to sending each other digital cupcakes without Big Brother watching us.

This is a temporary move until Facebook can draft a new Terms of Service that addresses the users' concerns. CEO Zuckerberg wrote a new blog post ( http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=54746167130 ).

Submission + - Why Are So Many Nerds Libertarians? 9

BrendanMcGrail writes: Why do so many nerds seem to lean toward the Libertarian end of the spectrum? As a leftist, I know there are many people who share my ideological views, but have very little in common with me in terms of profession and non-work interests? Is the community's political bent directly tied to our higher than average economic success?

Submission + - Will Google lose its trademark? 1

140Mandak262Jamuna writes: Once upon a time, Google was the new kid on the block in the search engine arena. Then it became the big kahuna of that area. There was a time when using google as a verb would have brought a smile. But now every body and his brother and even the prim and proper, stiff upper lip and what not types like the Deputy Attorney General Ronald Smetana are using it as a verb. The quotes have been dropped, the capitalization still persists as some vestigial token acknowledging it as a neologism.

Already a number of dictionaries define google as a plain English word. If OED or some such big name dictionary includes it, would Google lose its trademark? Does Google have lawyers who assiduously take steps to protect its trademark and not allow it to become a generic word to mean "search the internet"? Didn't Xerox lose its trademark or came close to losing it? Imagine a world where Microsoft Live could be branded as "Microsoft Live Google"!

Submission + - Linux Indie 500 car marketing: abuse or good idea?

cheros writes: At Tux 500 someone is trying to get enough money together to sponsor a Linux logo'd car in the Indie 500. It seems to be aiming for a lot of money (min $25k) for creating Linux awareness, and has so far apparently collected $11k .. $12k.

However, is this really a good use of community money or is this blatant opportunism to sponsor a hobby? A discussion at YouTube seems to throw a handful of nuts in the gearbox of this prospective event.

I don't think it's a scam, but the whole idea doesn't seem so bright after reading the YouTube comments.

What is your opinion? Good idea, nice try or contribution scam?
