Submission + - Nanosolar delivers high-efficiency thin film cells

Rei writes: "Thin film photovoltaic systems have been heralded as a way to make solar cells cheap enough for widespread adoption, but have also been criticized for their low efficiency. A number of companies have been working to fix this equation. Now, one of them — Nanosolar, a privately held company with funding from Google's Sergey Brin and Larry Page — has finally shipped their first cells produced in a mass-production environment. Nanosolar's cells boast being the world's first printed thin-film solar cell in a commercial panel product, the world's lowest-cost solar panel (they plan to sell at $0.99/Watt, compared to the current minimum of $4.83/Watt), and the world's highest-current thin-film solar panel (5x the next closest on the market), among other things. Their Panel #2, made available as a collectors item on Ebay with the profits going to charity, has already racked up bids of over $10,000."

Submission + - OpenLDAP 2.4.6 Released (openldap.org)

markjl writes: "OpenLDAP 2.4.6 has been released, the first official release in the 2.4 branch, preliminary benchmarks are underway to compare performance with Microsoft ActiveDirectory/ADAM. This new branch announcement represents many performance and feature enhancements to the client, server, and libraries as well as improved documentation (one of my peeves with the project). The server support multi-master replication with dynamic configuration and monitoring, improving it's robust feature set."

Submission + - Planetary Society Debunks "Puddles" on Mar

Rei writes: "Yesterday, Slashdot posted about what appeared to be puddles of water sitting on Mars. Unfortunately, according to the Planetary Society's blog, the authors of the paper didn't even bother to check the context in which the "water" photos were taken. The article notes that one shouldn't trust papers that haven't yet gone through peer review. "The white square shows you where the image comes from. It's in the middle of Opportunity's Burns Cliff panorama, on some of the steepest slopes that Opportunity saw before arriving at Victoria crater! Those can't be puddles — unless the amazing "liquid" that puddles here on Mars in a freezing near-vacuum also has antigravity properties.""

Submission + - No more FoxTrot daily comic strips; WoW to blame?

Philaretus writes: A press release at the Universal Press Syndicate is announcing that Bill Amend will cease production of daily FoxTrot comic strips, long popular in the nerd community. Amend "is taking time to pursue other creative outlets." But in other news, Bill discusses being hooked on World of Warcraft. Coincidence? I don't think so! Says Amend: "Seriously, it's a full-time job just getting my strips out the door each week. And Warcraft doesn't help."

Submission + - Hybrid is Smart.

adaminnj writes: "Lithium Technology Corporation recently announced that it has converted a Daimler Chrysler "Smart ForFour" into a demonstration plug-in vehicle in London. The battery system is the result of collaboration with Zytek, one of the world's leading suppliers of expertise in automotive control systems and powertrain management. The vehicle has a fuel economy of over 84 mpg and an all-electric range of 20 miles.

The battery can be charged by either the internal combustion engine (ICE) and regenerative braking or by plugging into a electric outlet.

The vehicle utilizes a hybrid power train based on a 68 hp, 1.5 liter, 3-cylinder turbo charged diesel engine coupled with two high-efficiency permanent-magnet electric motors.
