Submission + - Affiliate marketing meets social networking (monkeyjar.com)

ilblissli writes: Affiliate marketing meets social networking to bring shoppers extra cash for the holidays.

As most of us geeks know, someone somewhere is making money off of our clicks when we buy products or services online (that’s how Google makes billions of dollars a year). Well there are sites out there that can give you back a slice of that pie when you shop online. MonkeyJar is one such site.
MonkeyJar is free to join and has an extra special added bonus. Not only can you make money back from your own purchases, but those who you refer as well. Hence bringing social networking into the fray, and possibly bringing you a lot of extra income during the holiday season. They have a nice little slide show about how it all works and the staggering amount of income that can come from referring a few friends and having them do the same.

The only thing I would ask my fellow slashdoters to do is sign up using my referral ID and check it out so that I get credit for cluing you in http://www.monkeyjar.com/registration/invitationApplication.cfm?referrer=3405 . At that point feel free to post a reply here letting others know how it is, or even post your own referal ID on facebook/twitter/myspace so that you guys can make all the cash you want. It really is win win for everyone involved, as it costs nothing and gives you money when you or your friends shop.

There are definitely other sites out there trying to accomplish the same sort of virtual mall environment with affiliate marketing bonuses but this is the only one I know of that also incorporates both social networking, and is free to join. Please feel free to post with any other sites that may help myself or others out with earning a little extra cash this holiday season. This could include your experiences with blogging using amazon.com affiliate links, Google adsense, or whatever else you have tried. If we all pool together to share simple money making tools on the internet we will all win. :)

Real Time Strategy (Games)

Command & Conquer MMO a Possibility? 159

TheProphet92 sends along a speculative piece about the future of EA's popular RTS franchise, writing: "EA's real-time strategy games don't have the luxury of extensive funding the way some other franchises do. EA has been milking their game engines for all they're worth and then some. They have been using various versions of the 'Sage' engine for the past half-dozen or so RTS games, and they need money to make a new one. Perhaps an MMO is the way to go for EA, using none other than their famous Command & Conquer franchise."

Comment audio books ftw (Score 1) 503

ebook readers are neat and all but i don't really see the point. they are all seeming to come out with more and more features that make them more appealing (speakers, color screens, wifi)... at that point why not just get a tablet pc and be done with it? at any rate i don't have the time to sit down and read no matter if it was on paper e-reader or standard ebook on pc. for this reason, to me, audio books are king. I get to listen to just about anything i've ever wanted to read every day while i work out at the gym and to and from my daily commute. long live audio books!

Vulnerability, Potential Exploit In Cisco WLAN APs 35

An anonymous reader writes "The AirMagnet Intrusion Research Team has uncovered a new wireless vulnerability and potential exploit associated with Cisco wireless LAN infrastructure. The vulnerability involves Cisco's Over-the-Air-Provisioning (OTAP) feature found in its wireless access points. The potential exploit, dubbed SkyJack by AirMagnet, creates a situation whereby control of a Cisco AP can be obtained, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to gain access to a customer's wireless LAN."

Jumpgate Evolution Dev Talks Class Balance 86

Hermann Peterscheck recently made a post on the Jumpgate Evolution developer blog about NetDevil's strategy for balancing the various classes of ships in the game. They seem to be taking a different approach from most MMOs in letting the PvP side of the gameplay set the baseline, rather than allowing PvE concerns to override that. From the section titled Combating Combat: "Early on our lead systems designer, Jay Ambrosini, came to the correct conclusion that all of the preliminary balancing was best done in a PvP context. The reasoning is that in PvE, the player needs to feel powerful, but in PvP the fight needs to feel balanced. Once ship classes are balanced in PvP, its not as hard to make the player feel powerful in PvE, but the opposite is not true. We spent many weeks playing just the first class of ship, the light fighter, in teams of 5 or 6 in order to evaluate what it was that made those ships fun to fly and fight. After daily battles, you begin to see what makes those ships work. We also started with the mid level ships as opposed to the low or high level ships. This is primarily because you can find the center point and then work upwards and downwards from there. ... It's very tempting to just throw a bunch of classes of ships together in order to say things like "our game has 15 classes of ships!" but this, we believe, is the wrong direction. People want meaningful and strong choices and not lots of meaningless, empty choices. Currently we plan to have 4-6 classes, but they will each have nearly endless possible configurations within those groups."

US Supercomputer Lead Sparks Russian Govt's Competitive Drive 74

CWmike writes "Russia's launch of Sputnik in 1957 triggered a crisis of confidence in the US that helped drive the creation of a space program. Now, Russia is comparing the US's achievements in supercomputing with theirs, and they don't like what they see. In a speech on Tuesday, Russia's President, Dmitry Medvedev, criticized his country's IT industry almost to the point of sarcasm for failing to develop supercomputing technology, and urged a dramatic change in Russia's use of high-performance computing. Medvedev, at the opening address of a Security Council Meeting on Supercomputers in Moscow, told attendees that 476 out of the 500 supercomputers on the Top500 list were manufactured in the United States. 'Therefore, in general, our situation is very difficult,' he said."

Japanese Researchers Create Skiing Robot 52

An anonymous reader writes "In a bid to better understand the art of an effective ski turn researchers have recently built a robot to simulate the exact movements of a skier. The team of researchers from Kanazawa University in Japan built the ski robot to investigate the existing movements of skier's turns and see if there is any room for improvement on current techniques."

What's the Importance of Graphics In Video Games? 506

An anonymous reader writes "I develop games as a hobby. I've experimented with games on almost every platform available. For me, the gameplay is the most influential factor of a game, with history and graphics dividing second place. But, for some reason, it's not the technical beauty of the graphics that appeal to me. I have played Crysis, and I've played Pokémon games. The graphics of the Pokémon games entertain me as much as the graphics of Crysis. I think both are beautiful. So, why is the current generation of games giving so much importance to the realism in graphic games? I think it is sufficient for a game to have objects that are recognizable. For example, while the water in some games may not look as good as in Crysis, I can still tell it's water. What are your opinions on the current direction of game graphics? Do you prefer easy-to-render 3D scenes that leave space for beautiful effects, like with Radiosity, or more complex 3D scenes that try to be realistic?"

the reason these people sign up in the first place is to follow tweets of others. be it someone famous and worthless like ashton kutcher, or to follow news tweets like cnn.com regardless, you can't subscribe to someone's tweet stream unless you have signed up. people probably sign up for that reason, post once just because they feel that urge to push the shiny red button. then they just dip back into the shadows to lurk and watch other people's lives unfold.
