He received a first class honors degree in Chemistry (University of London) followed by a PhD in plant biochemistry (UCL, London) in 1980. Following postdoctoral research at UCL, he joined one of the very first plant biotechnology companies, Cetus Madison Corp (subsequently Agracetus, Inc.) Madison Wisconsin, USA. He led a research group which achieved the first genetically transformed staple crop (soybean). Subsequently his team developed a variety-independent gene transfer method for rice. These two achievements had a significant impact, as the first transgenic soybean on the US and global markets sold by Monsanto was a direct output of his group’s research efforts.

kdryer39 writes: LG has snatched up full rights to HP's webOS (which was last used in now-defunct Palm and TouchPad devices) and will integrate it into their line of "smart" TV's. WebOS was viewed as having a strong software foundation, but HP could not create a viable application ecosystem to keep up with Apple, Google, and Amazon. This poison arrow led to the dismal launch and failure of the TouchPad in 2010 and the resulting opening up of webOS last year.

While set-top implementations are a natural progression, I can only imagine where LG could take the failed OS with a little work and a face lift. Perhaps it can move us one step closer to the "Internet of Things," and have all LG-branded devices in the home sync with each other (and as a result, secretly plot the creation of SKYNET).

I think the author of the story hasn't completely understood. The phenomenon exists, that's quite clear.

As mentioned above it was also presented at the American Nuclear Society's winter meeting in Nov 2012:

H.Yamada et al. performed similar experiments using Cs and detected increase of mass number 137 by TOF-SIMS. They used a couple of nano-structured Pd multilayer thin film and observed the increase of mass number 141 (corresponding to Pr) only when 133Cs was given on the Pd sample [8]. N. There have been quite a few news reports about LENR lately. There seems to be a revival in legitimate scientific research into this area. University of Missouri is running a 5.5 million USD research project, and scientists at other institutes like Purdue, Illinois-UIUC, NASA, MIT, SRI, NRL are all looking into it.

A couple of days ago the Nuclear Energy Institute was talking about it on their facebook page and the American Nuclear Society posted a similar story on their "nuclear cafe".

The University of Missouri will host a cold fusion conference in July this year and George Miley from Illinois (UIUC) will discuss his research results in a talk at the upcoming "Nuclear & Emerging Technologies for Space (NETS-2013) organized by the ANS starting coming Monday. On a ANS meeting in November 2012 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries reported about their transmutation experiment and successful replications of the experiment at Toyota lab.

thanks. I hope that you feel that reading this was a waste of your time when I tell you that this topic is also known as Low energy nuclear reactions, which after a short google you will find out is a synonym for cold fusion.

After all most people will tell you that cold fusion is crackpot, right ? That is can be dismissed without review.

well it was reproduced, by Toyota and Osaka University. And it is repeatable. So not an artifact. Whether it will scale and whether other "host" materials can be used needs to be answered. If they could throw $120M at that question they would certainly find the answer.

I am happy that you find this interesting, I wish more people would know about it. This is slashdot, stuff that matters, but nobody knows about it and I can tell why that is so.

This topic is also known as Low energy nuclear reactions, if you google that you'll find that it is also known as cold fusion. Now everybody _knows_ cold fusion is crackpot and can be dismissed without review. Yet, many reliable labs have presented compelling evidence that something anomalous is definitely going on. http://research.missouri.edu/iccf18/

Toyota has replicated the experiment.
