Comment Re:Use Thorium-based reactors instead (Score 2, Informative) 581

There is a company that knows how to include thorium into existing power plants and they have contracts to experiment in Russia and India: Thorium Power.

Their technology couuld quickly be included in existing plants refueling cycles.

Oh bomb making from Thorium is tricky as U233 has less than a 2 year half life. It is very radioactive.

Submission + - Thermite residue found at World Trade Center site!

lrohrer writes: "Finally a peer-review journal is documenting the thermite residue found at the site of World Trade Center site 8 years after 9/11:

http://www.newschief.com/article/20090812/NEWS/908125031/1014/OPINION?Title=Cause-of-destruction-of-WTC-discovered

It is military grade nano-particle stuff. So the simplest theory of how it got there is this: Bill Clinton shit bricks, literally, after the first WTC bombing. The problem he faced was that "the experts" said " If this would have been worse we would have no way of bringing the building down with out endangering our people and/or causing damage to other buildings blah blah blah...(perhaps)

If you recall the whole building was closed for over four months after that truck bomb went off. During this time expert military/CIA/FBI/NSA people laced the entire building with thermite. Every column on every floor was drilled and the termite was pre-loaded. Other than the government there are perhaps only 12 other organization that could bring the buildings down so well. It came down in 10 seconds which is the time required for a brick dropped from the top!

Who flipped the switch? Obviously the switch would have nuclear missal level of security and presidential level authority to operate. It could be automatic — computer controlled. Thermite might detonate if over heated.

Building 2 may have come down on its own — It may have ignited on its own or tripped the "oh shit" button. The top 7 stories started tilting and falling before the whole building blew up. Building 1 and building 7 were triggered by someone.

BTW it makes sense to bury this information/story. Do you want a terrorist to know your biggest buildings are already wired and loaded to explode."

NASA s latest report (March 2009) on sunspots is that there will be a massive ramp up of activity in 2010. It does not look that way to me nor the above author. Still another year or so is required to truly show the statistical trend.

Real science will prevail.

stoolpigeon writes: "IBM has made a move to support Open Source RDBMS PostgreSQL by supplying $10 million in funding to EnterpriseDB, a company that supports PostgreSQL as well as selling their own propietary extensions to the database product. In the past EnterpriseDB has primarily advertised itself as an Oracle competitor, though the article says, "Derek Rodner, EnterpriseDB's director of product strategy, explained that Postgres Plus 8.3 also adds in new application quick starts which are supposed to help with installation issues. They will also help in EnterpriseDB's battle against MySQL for open source database supremacy.""

Submission + - Surfer Devises 'Theory of Everything' (telegraph.co.uk)

Dylan Knight Rogers writes: "Surfer dude physicist Garrett Lisi has devised a 'theory of everything' based upon the complex mathematical constructs of the 'E8'. From the article:

E8 encapsulates the symmetries of a geometric object that is 57-dimensional and is itself is 248-dimensional. Lisi says "I think our universe is this beautiful shape." What makes E8 so exciting is that Nature also seems to have embedded it at the heart of many bits of physics. One interpretation of why we have such a quirky list of fundamental particles is because they all result from different facets of the strange symmetries of E8. Lisi's breakthrough came when he noticed that some of the equations describing E8's structure matched his own. "My brain exploded with the implications and the beauty of the thing," he tells New Scientist. "I thought: 'Holy crap, that's it!'
His most interesting treatise on physics can be found here."

Submission + - A Convenient Truth - Preview goes online (climatefilm.com)

Anonymous Coward writes: "A CONVENIENT TRUTH" PREVIEW GOES LIVE
Feature length preview of "A Convenient Truth", a film about the world getting better, goes online.

Shot in late 2006, after watching Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, Jack Guest was inspired to find a A Convenient Truth about climate change. He invested his life savings and took a film crew to Sweden (by boat), a country aiming to break its dependency on oil by 2020. There he met a full range of people, from politicians and scientists, to families and entrepreneurs.

The feature length preview film tells the story of Jack's journey to Sweden, with part one released today:

www.climatefilm.com/preview

In December of the same year Jack continued his journey, crossing the Atlantic by cargo ship in search of love, a low carbon footprint, and time to enjoy the ride. Things didn't go exactly according to plan. With a light hearted tone A Convenient Truth's positive message is that things can get better and that change does not have to mean sacrifice.

The film is heading for release in early 2008.

Jack Guest, Director of Participate Productions said: "We've split our feature length preview of A Convenient Truth into five parts and will be releasing a new part online weekly following the launch on the 15th November, so it can reach as many people as possible. The film's global message is that things can get better, that the world can work for everyone, and that we will make it happen.""
