Submission + - CSC Danish Accounting Scandal (computerworlduk.com)

golfnomad writes: "I ran across this article about what has been going on with CSC and the possible reasons of the CEO retiring. If you read the entire piece it will shed some light as to
what is going on with CSC business and some of the problems that are on the horizon.

Yes, real life computer communications/hacking is boring, real Admins don't use GUI's, command line baby, all the way. Have you ever seen the GUI for firewall software? It could take you days to figure it out if you have legal access. Get in through command line, swap out the *rules files* restart fw instance and go where ever you want

When hardware is too *old* to run windows effectively any longer, it becomes a LINUX server in my house. While 2gb of memory or less may tax Microsoft applications, a LINUX fileserver (samba) and Openoffice for the kids homework is just fine. Tighter kernel, less bloat. We just got our Son starting College a new laptop, it came with W7. At 1st glance I see no great advantage to this new OS, all the other Windows systems we use are running XP, it it does what we need. W7 may be much better than VISTA, but unless forced I will use what works and causes me the less maintenance (we don't get paid for maintaining home systems now do we :-) ) I am a UNIX Admin and would like to let that sleeping dog just lie.... I had hoped to be able to replace the 3 laptops I bought the Fam in 2007 by now, but given the economy, not possible. Unless it dies completely (overheated cpu/gpu due to insufficient cooling) or another child starts College, I will have to limp along with what I have, and re-purpose from Windows to LINUX to extend hardware usage. The only exception to this was my cell phone, now I actually have a Droid. Hard to imagine that hardware making technological improvements by leaps and bounds, for me the apps are what make it very useful for now.

Why Are Video Game Movies So Awful? 385

An article at CNN discusses why big screen interpretations of video games, even successful ones, often fail to succeed at the box office. Quoting: "The problem with successfully adapting video games into hit Hollywood spin-offs may lie in the way in which stories for both mediums are designed and implemented. Game makers chasing the dream of playing George Lucas or Steven Spielberg will always strive to coax human emotion and convincing drama from increasingly photorealistic virtual elements. The Hollywood machine, in its endless chase for big bucks, can't help but exploit the latest hit interactive outing, often failing to realize it's often a specific gameplay mechanic, psychological meme or technical feature that makes the title so compelling. Both sides may very well continue to look down in disdain on the work that the opposite is doing, which can doom any collaborative efforts. But where the two roads truly diverge is in the way stories are fundamentally told. Films offer a single, linear tale that's open to individual interpretation, whereas games are meant to be experienced differently and in a multitude of ways by every player." On a related note, reader OrangeMonkey11 points out that an 8-minute short has showed up online that appears part of a pitch for a potential Mortal Kombat reboot movie. Submission + - Is SONY "bricking" older PS3's with v3.30 firmware

golfnomad writes: Tonight, my son upgraded the firmware on our older PS3. Shortly after that, we were getting the "yellow light of death".
So, now the 80gb version that has the compatibility to run PS2 games no longer works. Here's hoping that this was not intentional on SONY's part and there will be a *fix* out soon.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Chinese Root Server Shut Down After DNS Problem 91

itwbennett writes "After a networking error first reported on Wednesday last week caused computers in Chile and the US to come under the control of a system that censors the Internet in China, the 'root DNS server associated with the networking problems has been disconnected from the Internet,' writes Robert McMillan. The server's operator, Netnod, has 'withdrawn route announcements' made by the server, according to company CEO Kurt Lindqvist."

If I do socialize with any of my co-workers, it will be MY choice of who and when. Activities like bowling, golf, etc are good, but to just generally *have* to sit around an chat....no thanks. And don't even get me started on *team-building* crap......

A Hyper-Velocity Impact In the Asteroid Belt? 114

astroengine writes "Astronomers have spotted something rather odd in the asteroid belt. It looks like a comet, but it's got a circular orbit, similar to an asteroid. Whether it's an asteroid or a comet, it has a long, comet-like tail, suggesting something is being vented into space. Some experts think it could be a very rare comet/asteroid hybrid being heated by the sun, but there's an even more exciting possibility: It could be the first ever observation of two asteroids colliding in the asteroid belt."

Comment Re:Hats off to the rover designers (Score 1) 181

I'd just like to take this opportunity to tip my hat to the folks that designed this rover. It was slated for a 180 day mission, and they just finished up day 2,190. That's some pretty high quality engineering that must have gone into this project, especially when you take into account it's on *another planet*, so no tech to fiddle with something that's just a bit off here or there.

No parts, no cleaning, no help at all. To top that off, it's doing all of this on Mars, which isn't really an electronics friendly environment. It crash landed on another planet from a rocket ship and worked 10x longer than it was supposed to.

Well done.

2,190 days - 180 days = 2010

Herschel Spectroscopy of Future Supernova 21

davecl writes "ESA's Herschel Space Telescope has released its first spectroscopic results. These include observations of VYCMa, a star 50 times as massive as the sun and soon to become a supernova, as well as a nearby galaxy, more distant colliding starburst galaxies and a comet in our own solar system. The spectra show more lines than have ever been seen in these objects in the far-infrared and will allow astronomers to work out the detailed chemistry and physics behind star and planet formation as well as the last stages of stellar evolution before VYCMa's eventual collapse into a supernova. More coverage is available at the Herschel Mission Blog, which I run."
