Comment Scientology in Belgium (Score 4, Interesting) 540

Scientology in Belgium is interesting to say the least

* A lot of extreme right wing politicians has something to do with Scientology.
- Johan Demol - ex-member of a extreme right wing organisation "Front de la Jeunesse" , also ex-cop and ex-politician.
- When there is something in the news about Scientology in most cases you will see Hugo coveliers being interviewed as their laywer (who also have made some appearances in Scientology videos) spouting the same "religion prosecution" bullshit.

* Scientology tries to infiltrate into our government and organisations
- The secret service suddenly stopped working with the communication firm Nextel because of the fact that is has close ties with Scientology. What incident happened is a mystery.
- In the Flemish parlement there was a partner company (Ideas) of Hewlett Packerd that provided certain services that was a Scientology company. There was a lot of uproar because it came out that Scientology companies provided services to the Ministry of Defense, Local affairs and Social Services. Those departments that have very sensitive data... . Also because there are documented cases where in the nineties they also tried to infiltrate the French and German government departments.

* They over-flooded Belgian libraries with free (propaganda) material and books written by hubert.

Scientology is an extremely dangerous organisation. If it was me I would already put out International Arrest Warrant for the leaders of this dangerous cult.
Microsoft

Submission + - Windows 8 proving less popular than Vista (kitguru.net) 5

NettiWelho writes: Data from Net Applications shows that Windows 8 is less popular than Windows Vista, the operating system that proved unpopular with the enthusiast audience.

Windows 8 usage uptake has slipped behind Vista’s in the same point in its release. Windows 8 online usage share is around 1.6% of all Windows PC’s which is less than the 2.2% share that Windows Vista commanded at the same two month mark after release.

Net Applications monitor operating system usage by recording OS version for around 40,000 sites it monitors for clients.

The slowdown for Windows 8 adoption is a bad sign for Microsoft who experienced great success with the release of Windows 7.

Data was measured up to the 22nd of December, so there is still time by the end of the month for Windows 8 to claim a higher percentage of the user base.

The problem is that the movie industry sees it as the new cash cow.

* When you look at good movies like Avatar and Hugo you will notice that there is such a thing as doing 3D right. The problem is that this is not the case for most movies.

* Most movies available are (bad) conversions of movies that where never produced with 3D in mind.

* It is ridiculous expensive not only the movie tickets but you need to see the prices they are asking for one stupid 3D movie here in this country. 28 a 35 euro's... And then they complain those things aren't selling even if a lot of people have 3D tv's at home (as you weren't able for a period of time to buy tv's without 3D)

I hated 3D because the active glasses made me sick and gave me headaches, with the passive versions I don't have a problem.

Then you still have the clumsiness of the form. A tablet is a thousand time easier to pick up and to handle in different situations.

I'm gonna let you into a secret people create content *all* the time from tweets to email to photos MORE than they ever have. What has lost importance is Office.

And for that kind of content (pictures, tweets) what is the added value of a computer ? Nothing. When I speak about "creating content" I'm talking about situations like office, photoshopping, etc. I surely wouldn't put office in the same range of sending a 140 character message, the average e-mail or taking a picture.

For me that is one THE biggest reasons that Microsoft will fail in mobile space. Office isn't that a big deal for the general (let me stress the general non techie group which is the biggest market) public so Office on tablet isn't that big USP like they make it to be. But then again the average nerd, developer, ... really doesn't understand the general public that much. They always tend to see their perspective and then they are baffled about the popularity of certain things or even brands like Apple.

I found netbooks clumsy devices because of the small (lower res) screens and the small ficky keyboards. Even today I still don't see any good use for them.

Tablets on the other hand are mostly content consuming* devices and regarding their usefulness in that regards, they are miles away from more PC. Hell they are not even on the same planet. For surfing/reading/... from my coach, on the train,.. I would pick a tablet over a laptop on any day. Hell if I'm in the same room as my PC and I have the tablet at hand, I mostly will pick up the second one.

It baffles me that I know a lot of people against SW patents, but then are cheerleading when a Nokia, Motorola or Samsung is playing the FRAND card. And don't start that the enemy of my enemy, BS. You can't be a little against software patents.

Submission + - EU charges Samsung with abusing vital telecoms patent (reuters.com) 1

Dupple writes: The European Commission charged Samsung Electronics on Friday with abusing its dominant position in seeking to bar rival Apple from using a patent deemed essential to mobile phone use.

The Commission sent a "statement of objections" to the South Korean group, with its preliminary view that Samsung was not acting fairly.

"Intellectual property rights are an important cornerstone of the single market. However, such rights should not be misused when they are essential to implement industry standards, which bring huge benefits to businesses and consumers alike," Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in statement.

What I really find weird as a European is that gun loving Americans always tend to point to Switzerland. I think there is a lot of misinterpretation regarding swiss gun politics as it totally different of the situation in the states.

* There is mandatory yearly training for people that are a member of that militia.
* As of 2007 they don't issue personal ammo. Only special rapid deployment & military police has ammo stored at home.
* When a person service is ended and he wants to keep the weapon it is first sent to the factory to remove the automatic feature. * The sales of automatic weapons and silencers is forbidden.
* To carry a gun you need to have a "Waffentragschein" permit which in most cases is only given to private persons working in security
* To buy a weapon as a private citizen is regarding permits and background checks not that much different as in most European countries. Switzerland is also a Schengen country.

The swiss gun politics in no way is that similar as in the States.

Give me a break, really that old "Wii" explanation doesn't fly with the WiiU.

What really struck me as odd is that you pay 100 euro's more for a system that produces the same kind of visuals (maybe with less performance) then a xbox 360 or PS3.
