Submission + - What's So Bad About SOPA (wordpress.com)

briancox2 writes: "... if a government were to make a decision that a current business model was the correct one, and begin passing laws that cement that business model in place forever, then that government does not have the best interest of the entire economy at heart. Instead a true Capitalist system encourages any and all business models to exist. And a government that wishes to promote the ideals of Capitalism does not lend itself to any industry as its personal strong-arm to prevent competitive threats. Instead, such a government would stick to its original purpose of promoting freedoms of its people."

Submission + - Film Turns Windows Into Solar Panels (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: "At the Ceatec electronics conference in Japan this week, 3M is showing film that turns windows into solar panels. Although the product only generates about 20% of the electricity of a traditional solar panel, it will cost about half as much, is much easier to install, and takes up no additional space. 'An average person could go to the store, buy some of this, and then bring it home and install it themselves,' said Yasuhiro Aoyagi, a senior manager in the company's construction markets division."

Submission + - Japan re-opens some towns near Fukushima (businessweek.com)

JSBiff writes: Bloomberg, among others, is reporting that the Japanese govt has partially lifted the evacuation order, allowing residents to return to 5 towns previously in the evacuation zone. Additionally, a key milestone has been reached in achieving a full "cold shutdown" of the damaged reactors — the temperature of all three reactors has dropped below 100 deg. C.

It's a shame that they were unable to return home for 6 months, and for people who lived closer to the plant, they might never be allowed to return home. Now the question is, will residents actually *want* to return, other than to maybe retrieve stuff they left behind?

Torvalds was always more pragmatic than Stallman. And Stallman is getting more out of touch with reality, not having programmed the last 20 years.

If you're trying to say Stallman is a weirdo, I agree, but there's no need to insult the good man.

Besides that, you don't know what you're talking about. His last commit (at the time of writing) to the emacs source repository was less than a month ago:

Submission + - Graphene to Redefine Future Computing (itproportal.com)

hypnosec writes: A group of scientists have claimed that next generation computers made using Graphene will be faster than their silicon counterparts.

The scientists have found that electrons move faster in Graphene than they do in silicon. Graphene, the world’s thinnest material, was discovered by scientists at the University of Manchester in 2004.

Graphene, which is built with a single layer of carbon atoms, is also extremely flexible, which opens up more doors for technological advancements related to next generation computers.

Submission + - Ubuntu 11.10 Down to 12-Second Boot (crn.com)

deadeyefred writes: Even though it's still only in alpha, it appears as though the forthcoming version of Ubuntu, version 11.10, will be much faster than earlier versions according to this story. It looks as if the switch from GDM to LightDM will have a significant impact as Ubuntu gets closer to "instant on" status.
