67-Kilowatt Laser Unveiled 395

s31523 writes "Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California has announced they have working in the lab a Solid State Heat Capacity Laser that averages 67 kW. It is being developed for the military. The chief scientist Dr. Yamamoto is quoted: 'I know of no other solid state laser that has achieved 67 kW of average output power.' Although many lasers have peaked at higher capacities, getting the average sustained power to remain high is the tricky part. The article says that hitting the 100-kW level, at which point it would become interesting as a battlefield weapon, could be less than a year away."

The Return of the Fairness Doctrine? 732

Slithe writes "Last week at the National Conference for Media Reform, Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich (a long-shot candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination) stated that the Fairness Doctrine may be reinstated. Kucinich will be heading up a new House subcommittee that will focus on issues around the FCC. The Fairness Doctrine was an FCC regulation that required broadcast media to present controversial issues in an honest, equal, and balanced manner. The FCC repealed it in 1987 — Democrats at the time tried to forestall this move but were ultimately thwarted by a veto by President Ronald Reagan. Critics of the Fairness Doctrine have stated that it was only used to intimidate and silence political opposition. At the convention, Kucinich said, 'We know the media has become the servant of a very narrow corporate agenda. We are now in a position to move a progressive agenda to where it is visible.'" In the interest of fairness, here is a Republican, free-market perspective on the return of the Fairness Doctrine.

Viral Fossil Brought Back To Life 320

hey hey hey writes "In a controversial study, researchers have resurrected a retrovirus that infected our ancestors millions of years ago and now sits frozen in the human genome. Published online by Genome Research this week, the study may shed new light on the history of these genomic intruders, as well as their role in tumors. Although this particular virus, dubbed Phoenix, is a wimpy one, some argue that resuscitating any ancient virus is inherently risky and that the study should have undergone stricter reviews."

Journal Journal: Asking Slashdot: Looking for a step up 4

They say it's not what you know, but who you know.

So, I'm putting what I know out there, and hoping that someone out there who I know can help.

I'm looking for a job upgrade. Better salary, hopefully better commute, and a change of pace from where I've been the past 5 years.

My resume is here.

Journal Journal: [Elections] - Georgia Primary, Governors 5

Just some notes on who's running for what in the Georgia primaries next Tuesday, to help my own decision-making. If any other Georgia dotters out there have any insight, please, speak up.

So, what I've got here is first impressions from their web sites, and what I know about each of them.

Journal Journal: Golf Cart DUI 3

So, the city manager was arrested for DUI and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. His open container was a glass of wine, and the vehicle was a golf cart.

Journal Journal: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 5

So, just the other morning, I was listening to this discussion of creation vs. evolution on the radio, and the question that came up over and over of the exact age of this ball of dirt we're living on.

Some people insist that the world is billions of years old. Others are adamant that it's only a few hundred thousand.

Here's my thought:

Can't make this stuff up....
This caught my eye from the latest News of the Weird:

"The May 10 tornado that hit Highland County, Ohio, touched down in the town of Hillsboro, along Wizard of Oz Drive."

Who'd a-thunk?

Journal Journal: Did you know...

...that under the immigration bill that the House just rejected from the Senate, that illegal immigrants would have been allowed to pay just 3 out of 5 years of back taxes. And it's up to the illegal immigrant to pick and choose which 3 years. Consider, also, that these are 3 years of work that's not in any corporate records, not in any tax records, and if they happen to "fudge" a bit (gee, fudging on taxes, here in America?)
